i found one at bits buy, and also newegg- its the 2400xp. I have been told to only buy the retail version with the heatsink/cooler in a sealed package. Would it be ok to get the OEM(thats all they have) and then match it up with a approved fan/heatsink? Im a novice.

yes, thanks! well, it would be a heatsink for the amd athlonxp+ 2400 cpu. I want probably the best one- not too terribly noisy, but one that cools well for a looong life cpu. Something that doesnt go to extremes ion price, yet i am willing to pay More for a better unit! thanks again!

If you're not gonna CO it (and raise the vcore), almost anything will do. The retail HS+F is a P.O.S. aluminum unit with a copper core. Didn't come with a good/smooth finish either. I thought you could (or used to able to) buy the stock cooler for about $10.

If you want a socket A, I would get an Athlon XP Mobile 2500+. In general they overclock better than the desktop XP line. Ofcourse if you are upgrading more than the CPU then I would bite the bullet and just go with a 939 MB and the Athlon64 Venice 3000+. That's what I did. It will cost you $100 - $150 more than an XP + HSF would cost.

I just ordered 2 of these: http://www.svc.com/narcoslsipro.html

They are not the best coolers available, but they cool better than the stock heatsink and are very quiet. The fan is also of high quality, I find that most fans included on cheap heatsinks tend to die in less than a year.
