Looking for a 5.1 MP3 encoder

Is there an MP3 encoder that will handle DVD-Audio correctly? I don't even know if the MP3 spec supports 5.1, but I have to assume that something does. If it doesn't, what is a good format to rip this to and where can I get the encoder?

This is my first DVD-Audio disc, so forgive me if the questions are stupid.

I didn't even know mp3 supported over two channels. 😱 Just did a Google search and it turns out there is/are mp3 5.1 encoders. But I have no experience with them and had never even heard of them because I am used to using LAME everywhere.

I do know AAC supports 5.1 channels. I use AAC for two-channel audio when converting DVDs to mp4 (x264 video, aac audio) files. But I have no idea how one would go about ripping/transcoding DVD-Audio.

Sorry for the lack of help.

What would you be using to playback the files? I've heard ok things about AUD-X, but I don't know if any non-computer devices support it.

Yea, I was in the same boat when I upgraded to a nice set of 5.1 speakers and found no sound coming from the rears. I used a Winamp plugin called AndrewLabs ATSurround Processor, and altho its not what you need, it at least offers simulated 5.1 audio on the speaker end.

I'd be happy if it ripped it to regular stereo, so long as it's off this God-forsaken DVD-Audio disk and into something more straightforward.
