Looking for a 27" monitor

I have 3x u2412m on my desk. I am in total love. I prefer 2 or 3 24inch screens than a larger 27. You get more screen space at the end.

The only reason you would want the Acer is because of the 3D capabilities. Is it worth it to you?

Also I've heard bad things about NewEggs LCD policy <- Not a personal experience. I ordered though Dell Small Business and had great support. They overnighted me a replacement.
 
yeah if you are picky about monitors like I am then neweggs monitor return policy is not so great. I would go through Amazon if local purchase is not an option.
 
I would still have a second monitor on the desk, but I use the computer mainly as a file server, VM host and gaming so one big display is what I'm after. I would probably go with Amazon as I like to get my money's worth out of Prime shipping, plus their return policy is pretty liberal.
 
My biggest hesitation with the Samsung is that it doesn't natively support Nvidia 3d. I like the Dell, but the resolution might be a little high for a single GTX 580 in the newer games that are coming out which is why the 24" Dell is probably a better fit. Has anyone experienced 3d in computer games?

I agree if you ever use an IPS, it will be hard to put up with the downsides of TN for everyday use. at the same time if you ever use a fast TN panel for gaming its hard to put up with anything slower again. its a compromise either way but I know I am really enjoying gaming again after getting out my old 1920x1080 TN panel monitor. of course the worst situation is having a TN panel and still getting crappy screen response which is what I keep encountering in my search for a decent affordable gaming monitor.

My solution will be to ultimately have one of each, and just choose which one I'm more in the mood to use that day. Not sure I'll ever go 3D, but I at least want to see firsthand what 120Hz is all about response-wise.

If gaming is your #1 priority, get 120hz. The 27" acer model is utterly amazing in games, once you see 120hz in action its hard to go back.

IPS is nice as well, but for better picture fidelity in 2d windows. For gaming, 120hz is the way to go.

Of course, the real answer depends on what your budget is. 120hz or IPS both have pretty hefty cost premiums over standard TN panels. If you're on a budget, -- I've always used LG monitors, I like this one:

It looks fantastic with no ghosting/dead pixels/bleeding and has no ghosting in games or movies. Thats about as good as you can get for a TN panel, that one looks fantastic. If you have additional cash though i'd recommend the 120hz acer model for gaming.

That won't happen with IPS, IPS panels inherently have a slower response than any TN. It really hasn't improved over the years either in that respect.

OLED perhaps a few years down the road

I disagree, coming from a 17/21" crt to an lcd all these fonts are gonna be massive ...
27"....30" to get the same resolution as a 21" crt is ridiculous imo

Have you actually used 2560x1440 on a 27"? Yes or no? I can't tell from your post.
 
I wear glasses but I don't wear it when I use the computer. With that said, I have no problem viewing text in my 2560 x 1440 27".
 
I'm going to wait a little before getting a monitor. It appears that both Acer and Asus are about to release a refresh of their monitors to include LightBoost technology. The Anand article mentions both an Acer HN274HB and Asus VG278H which should drop shortly.

no, but I've been using 21" 2048x1536 for 7yrs now, that's a lower dot pitch
not to mention 15" laptops with 1600x1200
All i'm saying is some of us prefer low dot/pixel pitch
ie: lotsa realestate per screen size

well you cant compare the laptop which is right in front of your face to a monitor that will be at least 2-2.5 feet away. my netbook has a much better pixel density than 24 inch 1920x1080 but that means nothing when each is used in the normal way.

valid point, but I typically sit 16-24" away from my monitor
not like I watch movies on it from across the room or try to read things while doing dishes 🙂

It wasn't my intent to hijack this thread btw, it just seems like i'm the only one that doesn't care for the direction lcd technology has gone.

I'd love to see 2560x1600 in a 24" desktop lcd

You are insane if you think 2560x1600 would be even close to usable on a 24". Now I KNOW you haven't used it on a 27". Fonts are extremely small on a 27" at that resolution, fortunately I sit about a foot away from my monitor so everything is visible. On a 24" fonts are more "visible" at 1080p than 2560x1440 on a 27". Fonts are small enough to make a 30" more desirable for that specific resolution......because if you stand a few feet away you can't see small fonts. It is tiny but somewhat usable. There is ABSOLUTELY no way that resolution would be usable on a 24".
