My not too old dell 2001fp is dying. I'm pretty sure the version I have is tn monitor and I *hate* it. While the monitor is primary for gaming I rather have a little ghosting and a rich saturated image than no ghosting and a washed out dull image. For that reason I'm looking for a pvm or ips monitor.

For reference this monitor is also dying. it is 4 years old (purchased on 2004-12-01 for $559 :)

Anyways it has developed a vertical stripe in which the pixels are jumboed. It is intermittent. At first I thought for sure it had to be the graphics card and heat related but then I swapped my 8800gts with an older 1800xtx and the same problem occurred :)

Anyways enough on tidbits (btw any chance this monitor has a 5 year warrant?) - any suggestions for a replacement ?

Hum. The 22 inch wide screen seems a lot less expensive than the 20inch but I'm worried that too many of hte games that interest me are not wide screen friendly. Pity there isn't a decent 20inch monitor out htere. The hp you mentioned seems a bit suspect.

You can set a widescreen monitor to use a 4:3 resolution, and not to stretch it. There would be black bars on the left and right of your screen when doing this.

Also note I suggested a 1680x1050 widescreen - but if you plan to game in 4:3 on it, you couldn't use 1600x1200 (the max height you'd have is 1050, so you'd probably have to use 4:3 res of 1280x1024). To use 1600x1200 on a widescreen, you'd need a 1920x1200 widescreen. This one's very good for gaming and costs about $360 shipped.

The benq screen is highly regarded as an alternative to the dell but it is still 24 inch - bit larger than I would like on my desk (which has another monitor hooked up to another system - linux).

i have the Samsung 204B 20.1" 1600x1200 screen and im very happy with it.
i know its a TN panel but it still has great visuals.
also there might be a newer model since i bought mine 2 years ago.

Hum. I'll have to check into it. Unfortunately my current monitor is dying faster than I would like - quite annoying.

Most games support 1680 x 1050 -- are you sure yours don't? Once you go wide, you never go back!

I'm pretty sure I want a 20 inch 1600x1200 monitor. The question is will a TN monitor be the only reasonable option. I had hoped for ips but I'm hearing a lot of bad things about the dell and the hp is sounding more like a crap shoot.

basically every modern game supports widescreen. the games out there that dont can easily be modded in just a few seconds. widescreengamingforum.com has solutions for the older games that dont natively support widescreen. if you are too lazy to do that then your monitor or graphics card control panel will let you choose scaling to keep the 4:3 image. theres absolutely no reason not to get a widescreen monitor for gaming. hell I havent even seen a 4:3 or 5:4 monitor in a store in quite a while.

I really don't understand why you are trying to convince me I want a widescreen :)

I think the fundamental issue is for non-movies I prefer conventional screen (4:3) ....

Well the problem is there are hardly any 4:3 LCD's out there. Everything has gone to widescreen, with 1680 x 1050 and 1920 x 1200 resolutions (22" and 24" respectively) that most people are running. The HP model mentioned above is one of the few 4:3's I've seen, and it's not good for what you want to use it for -- plus it's priced at a premium.

The LG 22" linked above is a great monitor at a fair price. If you insist on 4:3 then you're going to get an inferior monitor at an above average price. My opinion only, and it is your money! ;)

Well the dot pitch on that monitor is much worse than a 20inch. Also both the dell 2007 and hp are only $100 more and have ips lcd (though it is questionable what the hp actually has). I might call hp and go with that if I can be sure of an ips panel. I.e, this panel is not only not 1600x1200 it is also not ips :(
