Girlfriend just got a new dell, that didn't come with speakers. I'm looking to get a nice 2.1 speaker setup for her. Ideally this will be for DVD/TV series watching. Not at the highest quality, like youtube stuff. Other online stream sites.

Something enough to fill up a small room. Ideally i'm looking for a BEST BANG for the buck type deal. She told me she just wants something " loud", we both are non-audioiphiles.

I would like something around the $50 range but i am willing to go up to 100$.

this seems to be something i like but i really dislike that the fact that it doesn't have any grills or covers to prevent accident damages.

yea it costs more. dunno how far you want to stretch:p

if less then well. i guess you cant go wrong with logitech. but fill a room with what is the question..;) most any speaker can fill a room with sound of some kind. whether its nice to listen to is another question. youtube doesn't require much, even the dodgiest speakers are good enough for youtube.

as for the altec, you get what you pay for. i'm not sure you'd notice a difference if it were damaged;)

those are way over the budget that i'm aiming for.

a simple solution would be to run that z-2300 series THX rated speakers from logitech for $100 but i dont think that would be the best bang for the buck. I'm looking for something mid-range on price. something decent for DVD viewing at about 5-8 feet away. we have listened to the the lower $20-30 2.1 setups logitech has and at max volume it was pretty sad, the sub was BOOMIE then anything but overall volume was equal to like my sony headphones on max and holding it next to my ear.

you might be happy with something in the $50-$70 range like z4 or x-540 (5.1) but you might as well step up to z-2300 or g51 for a little more and a lot better performance. Same could be said for mid-range speakers from other companies.

From my experience, get the z-2300. Lower quality speakers will be fine for listening music or watching a movie at the desk but once you move back a few feet, it sounds distant and hollow because the speakers can't fill the entire room. I recommended the z-2300 to my friend 3 years ago during the $60 after rebate sell and he has never regretted it. In fact, he can fill the whole 3 floor apartment he shares with his speakers.

I'm pretty consistently awed at how good my Logitech Z4's are, considering what I paid

This. I paid $40 for them a while ago (sale at local store) and they work really well. Just don't plan on cranking the volume on them if you want to listen to music from your PC while your 3 rooms over the sound will start to distort.
