Looking for a 2.0/2.1 speaker set, similar to Swan M10s

Disclaimer: I know very little about speakers.

Currently I have Logitech X-530s and an X-Fi Gamer, but I would like to get "real" speakers, and I've had the Swan M10s recommended to me. I would say that my budget is <$150, but I'm flexible with that. I listen to lots of music, but unfortunately the source quality is usually mediocre. I also like to play games, but I would music is the higher priority. Occasionally TV or Hulu.

There's also the issue of space:

So I'm guessing that rules out bookshelf speakers (which are much better?). I was pretty close to ordering the M10s but thought I would ask for further opinions, including the D180MkII/08.

It sounds like you know the compromises. $150 is sorta low for "real" speakers. You're looking at either multimedia speakers or a pair of budget powered monitors or a really cheap pair of bookshelves and amp/receiver.

While I cannot comment on your space issues, another speaker that fits into your price range is the maudio studiophile AV40 and audioengine 2, although that price range is a bit challenging, and you make sacrifices in bass frequencies. The selection really spikes at the 400$ per pair price range.

I have no real response for you but at least this will serve as a bump...but WTH is up with the far left and far right monitors. They appear to be floating.

If you look closely, they are both on arms. ^_^

As for the AV40s, I had also looked at those, but didn't know what difference to expect from 2.0 vs 2.1. They are actually cheaper than the M10s by a small amount, too.

I read some on the AVS forums and it sounded like the Audioengines got mixed reviews.

the AV40's have a 4" driver. should be adequate for normal desktop usage and about as good as you'll get for $150.

I'm using my M-Audio LX4 ($220-250, phased out now) for the past 3 years and i LOVE them. Although my satellites are a bit small, the base is very good; as opposed to Logitech's crap.

If you can't shell out the extra $$ for the M-Audio BX5's, then just get the AV40's..

I ended up ordering the AV40s from Amazon for $120 (looks like $131 now) with prime shipping, and should be getting them today. It's not really clear how I did value-wise, but either way, I think I will be quite happy with this set.
