Looking for a 18-19" LCD screen for my dad with best image quality

Hi all.

As title says, my dad is looking for a new screen. The 17" Iiyama monitor is still as good as ever (so good that in fact I am gonna have it), but he is redecorating and wants to get a flat panel screen so he can tidy things up a bit and also because his eyesight is also getting gradualy worse (as is all of ours) as time goes on.

Anyway, my dad has always liked gadgets and technology so it has to be a flat panel screen, and he wants it to be bigger than the monitor it is replacing. He ideally wants something in the 18-19" size (although 17" would do as it will still be a touch bigger than what he has) and preferably with DVI input.

However, he is not a gamer, so a fast response time is not essential. At best it will see a couple of games, and watch a couple of movies on, but even then I don't think he will miss the faster response times. As long as its 25ms or less, its all good for these uses.

On a different note, my only concern is that with a 18-19" screen, the (popular) native resolution of 1280x1024 may actually end up harder to read than 1024x768 is on the 17" CRT monitor. Any opinions on this?? Obviously if it is and he then wants to run it in a non-native resolution that is gonna hurt the picture quality.

So, basically I'm looking for LCD screens with the best picture, DVI input, lets say in the lower half of the price spectrum. Manufacturer is not too important, so long as its not a complete pile of s**t.

Cheers.

Anyone? There must be some agreement as to what looks best out there??

This isn't a 'which is the best gaming lcd' or 'I want a lcd for doom3' type thread.

i hear the apple 20 inch has razor sharp text and you can always up the size of the text at its high res of 1650x1080. plus its widescreen. PLUS its sleek as hell. the only problem is that its $999. give us a price range please.

I'd say, about $500-550 would be on the expensive side. Definitely no more than around the $600 mark, maybe a bit over if its worth it - the Apple is well out of that range. As I said, looking at the lower end of the cost spectrum. Obviously I'm not expecting ultra-high res and quality, but just want to know what is the best of the cheaper side of things (it's not for a studio or something so not spending studio money).

Thanks for your replies.

Oh, and just to add, not important if it is or isn't widescreen.

If you've seen the difference between the two, how do they compare??

I don't think my dad will want to go for the 2001FP, I don't think he'll get along with the super high resolution it runs at. What do you think of the Dell Ultrasharp 1905FP monitor (if you've seen it or know anything about it)??

with the super high resoultion you can raise the size of the text so its easier to read, i think from like 90dpi to 130dpi (correct me if i'm wrong)

Yeah, but other things don't scale so easily / well, or just don't scale. I have suggested this also, but he shoots it down and in many ways I agree with him.

This is the one thing that annoys him with his laptop. He got it with a screen that has a really high res for its size and has to keep it at a lower res (which sort of negates the whole point of it). Although I have to agree with him on that one, the screen is way too small for the resolution it runs.

Cheers for the info guys.

After reading the reviews, I'm tending towards the Samsung 193P or the Dell 1905FP clone. Although due to being able to get a better deal, will probably go with the Dell 1905FP.

Out of interest, does anybody know anything about the Iiyama E485S 19" LCD display??

Well I'm not really sure how they "compare" but owning the 2001FP and the thing is beautiful. I got the 2001 because I was able to get it for about $300. As for the Benq I've never heard anything bad about except some say it has a low viewing angle.

If your dad won't like the high res of the 2001 definatly check out the 1905. I have heard good things about it except that it has some pretty bad ghosting which you say you are NOT worried about.
If I were you I would probably go with the 1905 just because of Dells extremely good return policy with dead/stuck pixels. Though you might be able to find the Benq at thier site as well which in that case I would just compare prices.

I second the notion of checking out the Samsung 910T, the V may be just as nice, not sure. I have a 910T, the 1000:1 contrast and sharp picture are beautiful. Also, with Samsung, you get a great warranty.
