Looking for a 120GB drive

Since 120GB drives seem to be the biggest drives you get to until the biggest price jump up to 160GB, I'm looking for a 120GB drive.
But I've been hearing a lot about 120GB Western Digital drives crapping out lately..

Western Digital 120GB $139
Maxtor 120.0GB $149
Seagate 120.0GB w/ 8MB cache $155

Any recommendations?

/edit.. those are Canadian dollars 😀

I've got a Maxtor 120GB 8MB cache drive and I love it. You can get the WD drive that cheap? (I'm assuming it's 8MB cache) But here in Vancouver, I generally see it at least $15 more.

Actually that's the non 8mb cache price... it's $159 for the JB series one here

Even so....you guys get ripped off up there! I'd get a WD or Maxtor 8mb cache drive...really just for the 3 year warranty and because they are cheap. Here in the States, $50 is the max I'd expect to pay for a 120gig drive after rebate.

If not the Hitachi then the WD because those 2 drives have 3 year warranty's...Maxtors with 8MB seem to be a crap shoot. Seagates only have 1 year.

Hitachi 180GXP is the best IDE HDD on the market, glass substrate media(data density), head load/unload (power saving modes, High impact tolerance) its also the fastest non SCSI drive I can find, expect about 64MB/sec. And the Deskstar line has always been an industy leader for seek times.

The next best drive is Seagate's 7200.7 if the 180GXP is unattainable

Good luck

Actually, that was a fairly old review I looked at. Can any of you Hitachi owners run HDTach, and tell me what CPU usage you're getting? It'd be much appreciated.

Very doubtful if the WDBB faster then the 180GXP with 8MB cache, maybe the JB/SE series in some benches

I own the 120GB Maxtor drive....never had any problems with....works great

Ive heard good things about the Samsung 120 GB w/8MB cache drive....there pretty cheap, have a 3 yr warranty and are good performers from what I've heard...I beleive NCIX.com has them...there based in British Columbia...my opion the best Canadian Computer Parts company....shouldnt be any problems at all 🙂

Haha, depends who you deal with at NCIX. I've had my share of good and bad experiences there. I usually go to their store to buy my stuff, when I buy stuff from there. NCIX I find is generally more expensive too... that's just my opinion 😀

I dont find them expensive...I know there's cheaper places, but I've bought thousands of dollars of equipment there over past couple yrs from a guy named Kevin Ma (kma@ncix.com) and have had no problems whatsoever.

I posted results of them @ another plce...The gif is small but you can maker it out if you Squint your eyes 😉

Ok, I re-read that StorageReview article. The Hitachi is beaten in several benchmarks by WD's JB series. I mistyped BB earlier.

With the Deskstar 180GXP IBM succeeds in combining the best attributes of the Western Digital Caviar WD2000JB and the Seagate Barracuda ATA V. The 180GXP rivals the WD2000JB's performance while mimicking the acoustic floor of the 'Cuda V. Those in the high-end ATA drive market who can overlook the WD's 20 extra GB of storage and slight performance advantage when it comes to high-end desktop usages (photo editing, sound/video editing) need look no further than the Deskstar 180GXP.

If the Hitachi's CPU usage is lower than the WD, I think I may have to buy one. That HD Tach graph GIF doesn't show CPU usage, unfortunately.

I've been exclusively using WD1200JB (120GB 8MB buffer) for quite some time now. I don't know much about Maxtor or Seagate, but I am pretty happy with WD for now.
