Eventually i would like to get a setup with 4X2tb drives in a RAID 10 array, i cannot seem to find any affordable enclosures (that arent 500$ just for the enclosure) to suit my needs. All i want is a place to plug in 4 drives for RAID10 with either eSATA or if i have to USB3 as the external connector. Anyone have any suggestions?

I have a readynas ultra 2 plus and a readynas ultra 4 plus. Really like both but only the ultra 2 has USB 3.0. Are you sure gigabit won't be fast enough?

gigabit, as in ethernet? I want it to be connected directly to my computer, i have no other places to connect it to since my only RJ-45 is being used for internet in, and the router has no more ports left on its switch.

If that is the case, why not just use your current case to house the drives?

I'll dig up a USB 3.0 cable and test to see if there is a difference in speed vs gigabit.

I have a HAF 912, im already maxed out for drives :p. It only holds 6, 4 more is impossible.

Thatd be great

You could get a cheap gigabit switch. That's only good if you care to have your drives on the network. Your other option is this:

Rosewill RSV-S4-6G SATA 150 & 300 4 x Hot-Swappable 3.5" Drive Bays RAID 0, 1, 10, 5, 5+spare, Spanning and JBOD (via Bundled RR622 RAID Controller Card)

$109

PERFECT, thats exactly what i want, eSATA interface, though its only sata 2 but thats fine, i doubt ill be bottlenecked by the internal interface :p.

+1

I have an older ReadyNAS NV+ or NV that works great.

I use it for all of my media streaming.

What I like is:

-AFP support
-WINS -- Can act as a WINS server for my home network
-4 x 2TB drives -- 6TB usable
-8-10MB/s could be faster, but I haven't messed around with it in a while. You can't expect much from 4 x SATA drives.
-Jumbo Frame
-Spin-Down, all my drives sleep during the day and only spin up maybe once a day if I watch a video or store somthing.
-FireFly streaming to TiVo -- this works okay, not great. I've had issues...but if you get it working right it's pretty cool for streaming movies to your TiVo. But now that I have an AppleTV2, i don't use TiVo anymore for that.
-UPS integrated shutdown.

There are a bunch more features that are pretty cool. It's not super cheap, but It works reliably.

I have a Synology DS410j that I will sell you. It's a 4-bay NAS that supports JBOD, RAID 0, 1, 10, 5, and 6.

Sans digital isn't a bad solution. Depending on what model you get, you can get one with an internal card. eSata and USB3 are what they have, again, depending on model.

The only downside is the cooling sucks so if you did go that route, I'd leave the cover off.
