a friend of mine is having issues with her child removing the cache and history as soon as she is done with the computer. normally, this wouldnt be a big issue...but the fact that she insists on deleting it all is causing my friend a bit of concern.
she is using xp and IE...i was wondering if there was a program that would also record browser history while running in the background or a way to lock the history.
i thought about a key-logger but i think that might be a bit much, considering.
thanks for any help.

I dont know how this person's network is set up, but if you set up a proxy server on another box and run the child's box through that, most proxy boxes have logging capabilities. I think aside from keylogging , the proxy mahcine would be the best way to see where the child is going without letting them know theyre being monitored.
I assume that is what youre trying to accomplish?

I agree that a proxy server would be the way to go. Also the first thing that came to mind is the google desktop caches copies of all of the websites viewed, but you would have to look into a way to hide its icon (as it is easily disabled by right clicking on the icon).

If any of the screen grabber programs can auto-snap on a timer, that might work.

If there is a second computer in the house, there are monitoring programs (used in PC labs) that run on the one computer to grab the screen and forward it to a monitor PC

What OS?

I don't know, but that seems like it would be something manageable via the group policy editor (available in XP PRO and MCE flavors, but sadly not included in Home).

pretty sure its xp home.
i dont know too much about how the network is set up, i havnt been over to her place in a while...she has more than one machine and a cable modem...probably all coming off a router.
i think for right now, the easiest thing for her would be to try toe google desktop and maybe the kid wont notice right away, which should be good enough to get an idea of what is going on.
i dont think she wants constant monitoring but i think the fact that her child wants to desperatly to cover her tracks is making her nervous. the child is a teenager...but young, so i can understand her concern.

Well, in case it's not XP Home, or if there's a way to get the the same options via the registry or something...

start-->run: gpedit.msc (Group Policy Editor)
Computer configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Internet Explorer/Internet Control Panel --> Set "Disable the General Page" to "Enabled"

this registry trick should do the same thing as in my post above as well....which helps you if her OS is XP Home.
