Fry's (LA area) has Great Quality CD-Rs that are rated at 24x. They have advertised a 50 pack for $9.50.

I have used 16x Great Quality CD-Rs and I didnt have one coaster with them. They are a good generic CD. Truly great quality.
 
does it REALLY matter what speed a cd-r is rated for? You couldnt use a cd rated at say.... 8x on a 12x or 16x burner? I was under the impresstion that they were all basically the same.
 
Yeah b/c i thought it was the cd burner that dictated speed not the cds themselves. I just got a new 24x liteon and realize that i have about 30 12x cd left and about 20 16x and was wondering if i could still get 24x speeds using those speed cdrs.

Can anyone verify that the speed rating for CDRs *actually* means something? 😕

no, you can't burn an 8x CD-R at a 12x speed, or 12x on a 24x speed.

however, you can choose the appropriate speed for the CD-R on high speed burner.

anyway, it could only be me.
 
I have a bunch of 16x cdrs and they all burn well at 24x. At the time that some of these cdr were made there were not any 24x cd burners so how could they test the media? I also have a spindle of 24x fujis that look identical to a 16x spindle of fujis -- the only difference -- the 24x has a upc sticker over the orinal upc and a 24x sticker over the original 16x marking.
 
To answer your question, I will try using 2x on 16x and see if it works. So far 12x on 16x without any problem. I guess it means, they are not guaranteed to work, you take your risk.🙂
 
I bought a big load of cheap 4x stuff way back when a 2x2x24 burners just went under $200. Burns great at 12x on my Plextor but I can't vouch for longevity except for maybe 3 years. The integrity of the burn was fine for both audio and data. Haven't tried it in my 24x Lite-on yet.
 
If you hadn't put those ??? at the end of your title, I wonder how many asses would have clicked on this post simply with the thought of busting you for posting in the wrong place 🙂
 
The laser on a CD burner is fusing the organic dye on a CDR blank. It has to do this in a very short period of time, and that time is far less at 24X rotation speeds as compared to 12X or 8X or 4X. In other words, the dye may not have been perfected to fuse in the microsecond timeframe for older, lower-speed-rated CD's.

You will just have to try for yourself. I do know for a fact that many people have had trouble burning CD's at 24X. However, I don't know that I have heard of a brand or type of CDR that wouldn't burn at least at 12X
 
DO NOT buy these GC CDRs at Frys. They are absolute crap. Perhaps the quality has improved since I bought my blanks 2 years ago, but the CDRs i burned with them quickly became discolored and unreadable.

Also, some CDRs simply can't be burned past their rating. Example, I tried burning audio on a 12x rated blank at 16x. Will not play. I tried burning an SVCD and audio CD on a 16x rated imation at 24x speed. It sometimes skips during playback. Moral of the story. Just because you don't get a coaster and it "works" doesn't mean it will function 100%.
 
My Prime Peripherals from the OfficeMax Deal is rated 16x. I tried burning them at 24x with my LiteOn and they don't work. There is no problem during the burning process, but the CD gives errors later on when it's being read. If I burn them at 16x they work fine though.

However, my Fuji (Taiyo Yudens) burns just fine at 24x.

So the rating does matter somewhat I guess.
 
Yes, you can burn any rated X media at higher speeds. The error rate will be higher, but with your drive you'll never be able to tell the difference..you need special hardware for that (unless your drive is REALLY bad i.e. first gen PSX machines would only play 1X burned games). If a media is certified for _X, that just means that if burned at _X, the error rate is within the standardized specifications.
 
I bought a 100pack of Fuji Taiyo Yudens rated at 24x (with a nice sticker over the original 16x).

About 1/4 of them will not burn correctly at 24x. I can only burn at 20x with 100% success.

Did the burning process crap up on you or did you have to try to read the CD before you knew that it was a bad burn?
 
I've had good luck w/ Imation, TDK and Sony 16x rated blanks on my new 24x sony burner.
No problems @ all. My 2 cents is that if you have a decent 16x blank you can probably do
24x w/ them....
 
The new Sanyo based 24x burners do a quick test burn on each disk and adjust the maximum burning speed. I believe they take a few seconds longer to do a burn because of this.
