I'm looking for a nice NEC monitor without the OptiClear feature that I can use for gaming. I'm going for NEC due to their quality I've experienced. Any particular NEC models someone can recommend?

I'll be doing things such as gaming (Oblivion, WoW), video editing, and typing documents.

Thank you for the help!

Have you actually tried the OptiClear monitors? I also demonized them until I used one for several hours. Very crisp, nice, CRT-like picture and the mirror effect is not an issue unless you really play dark games in a brightly lit room or have a light source behind you.

The currently available 19" NECs are:

- 90GX2: OptiClear but clearly the fastest NEC, very good image quality despite TN panel, decent viewing angles as well;

- 1980FXi and 1990SXi: non-glossy and great viewing angles/colors (IPS) but slow... - not recommended for gaming;

- 92XM and 92VM: entry level TN panels - slowish for TN, IMO crappy design, color depth lower than the others, image quality in general not on par with the GX2 series.

As you can see, you don't have much of a choice.

My suggestion: try the 90GX2 and if you really don't like the glossy panel (I think you'll keep it), go for a different brand, like ViewSonic or Samsung. Even though you only indicated relatively slow games, I wouldn't recommend the pricy and slow IPS panels or the entry level TNs with some serious ghosting and subpar IQ.

OMG LOL I never thought I'd hear this coming from you, who hated "god damn glossy screen" like the devil hates holy water.:p

Hehe :D

Don't misunderstand me - I'd probably still prefer non-glossy because I have a window behind my back but hey, taking it in a rational way, whenever I watch a movie or play a game (especially a darker one), I play in a dark room or just with my lamp on anyway. My CRT mirros quite a bit too, so I wouldn't be able to enjoy Doom 3 or Star Wars without darkening the room. Therefore, I think that for most users, OptiClear should be OK. As for its impact on IQ, it's not a measurable quality increase but as we said, all that matters is human perception - and the image on glossy panels does look more vibrant and crisp.

I always try my best to position my desk/monitor so that there is no light source directly behind, lamps placed a fair distance away and to the side. Quality venetian blinds or curtains usually do the trick if all else fails.

lol, you guys won't let me go of the OptiClear. I think i'm set on the standard screen without the OptiClear and if that's the case, what monitor should I get. My only concern if i'm not getting the GX2 or the 1970 is the response time. What monitor from NEC would be good for me?

Thanks for all your help!
