Looking at SSD boot drive

Is there some easy way to use a small ssd and change the default install directory, so newly installed software in windows is placed on a HDD?

Why would you want to do that? Simply to speed up boot time (nothing on the drive but Windows)? Seems not very worth it to me.

Default install directory is just coded in the registry. If you want to muck around in there, good luck, because that's just asking for trouble. Better tack to take is to just change the install directory when you install programs. Nearly every installers asks you to confirm C:\Program Files\MyProgram.

Overall you're probably better off just moving your page file and your most often used programs to the SSD.

If you have a multi-drive system, then there are some definate things you want to do like change your temp environment variable to your mechanical drive. Look in the sticky at the top of this forum.

Do you want to relocate the Windows install to the SSD? Why would you have one if you're not going to do that?

I know some mfgrs (Kingston) give you software to do that with some of their drives.

You can just use Acronis or some other imaging software to copy your primary OS to your SSD. This can be done, including boot sector, etc.
