Currently I have a 22" CRT. I'm not at home so I don't know the exact model, but I believe it's this one:

I've been thinking about upgrading it for a while now since it takes up a ton of space and is so heavy, but the display itself is great. Do you guys think it would be worthwhile upgrading and if so, what I should be looking at? I was thinking at least a 24", but price starts to become a concern.

I have a 19" CRT, a friend has a 22" LCD. i think my 19" 4:3 CRT it actually bigger or as big as his 22" 16:9 LCD in total square inches. I was going to do the same thing(upgrade to LCD) but i didnt want to have to go to a 23" or 24" just to get a screen the same size or a little bigger. I have used both computers alot and find my 19" alot better for reading webpages and text files due to a larger physical height of the screen(less scrolling). The 16:9 is a little better for gaming IMO due to being phisically wider allowing you to see more of whats going on to the side of you(usually more important than whats going on above or below you). If you have a 22" 4:3 CRT i would think you would need to look at at least a 26" or 28" 16:9 to get the same size screen in square inches.

Here is a link http://www.screenmath.com/

This can help you compare 4:3 screen to 16:9

That's what I'm afraid of. It almost seems that unless I spent a lot of money on a very large LCD display, it won't be much of an upgrade. I know my 22" CRT is only about 20" viewable, but I still run it at at 1600x1200 resolution. If I were to upgrade I would want not only a larger screen, but a higher resolution as well.

From the looks of it getting a 27" LCD would give me a bit more horizontal viewing area, but vertical would be exactly the same. So it almost seems I would have to jump up to a 30" LCD for it to be a worthwhile upgrade, unless I'm missing something.

I would recommend checking some LCDs out in stores. Play around with a few. You never know, you might like it. I don't know if power is a concern for you but your CRT probably draws 3-4X the juice that a comparable LCD would.
