Background:
I just recently got married, and we currently have three vehicles between us. My 2008 Fusion SE V6 with 60k miles, her 2003 Malibu with 200k miles, and our 2001 Explorer Sport Trac with 140k miles. The Fusion and Sport Trac have been excellent, but fuel economy is lacking (22-24 combined for the Fusion, ~17-18 combined for the Sport Trac). Her Malibu is on it's last legs, so we're looking to replace it. I still owe somewhere around $7-8k on the Fusion, and both other vehicles are paid for.

I went to a local dealership yesterday to test drive a 2012 Focus. Most of the ones they have are SEL or Titanium trim, and tipping the scales at $24-25k. I'm looking for something closer to $20k.

My requirements, in order of preference, are:
- Around 20k, not much higher.
- Good fuel economy. I want 30+ MPG combined if possible.
- Decent size / weight. A Focus is roughly perfect on both fronts. I could go a bit bigger (mid-size), but don't want to sacrifice fuel economy. I don't want to go any smaller.
- Decent fit and finish.
- REAR DISC BRAKES. I'm tired of drums.
- Decent technology.
- Decent power (160 HP+ is nice, wasn't impressed with the last generation Focus).

Right now, they have a 2012 Focus SE with the Sport Package (rear discs, nicer wheels, spoiler, etc.) for around $20k with discounts. The discount promotions from Ford run out at the end of the month (around $22k without discounts), and I hate feeling like I'm looking for a needle in a haystack in terms of requirements vs. price.

Any suggestions on other vehicles to look at, or roughly what I should be expecting to pay for what I want?

One last question, and this one probably falls under the "call and ask" category. Currently my parents have me on their insurance policy. My Fusion is co-signed between me and my dad. I was planning on buying the newer car, and handing the Fusion down to my wife. We still owe a bit on the Fusion though, so signing it over to her so that she can put it on her insurance isn't an option. Any idea if an insurance company would allow someone to add their daughter-in-law to their policy, or any other way to get her covered for a car that isn't in her name?

Thanks guys.

I'd definitely consider used if the discount was decent. I'm not a fan of the previous generation Focus, unfortunately, but I'm open to other considerations.

$24K for a Focus SEL is waaaay too high (especially since sticker before options is $21,700). I'm shopping in the same market right now, so here's what I've found so far about what you should be paying:

Focus SEL Hatch - With incentives, you should be able to get one for ~$20K before TTL (this is with no options, which I guess no dealer will actually have, but still). I'm using USAA's car buying service so I already have a quote in hand for $19,847 before I go in the door.

Mazda 3 - You can get some good deals on this right now. Should be able to get the i Touring models for well under $20K. I already have a quote in hand for $18K, for reference.

Hyundai Elantra - You can get the GLS with Auto and the Preferred Pkg for about $19K.

From the OP, it sounds basically impossible to beat the new Focus for what you want. And definitely keep to the current gen, I have an older gen that I love, but your list of wants basically precludes the older Focus completely. They're utterly different vehicles in every way.

Sonata is worth a look as well, lots of pros, negatives :

Looks goofy (subjective)
Less tech
Slightly worse fuel economy (marginal)
Increased depreciation (meaningless if you drive it till it's done)

It's available with pretty good stock motor, and a pretty nice turbo, but the turbo is going to be well out of the lower price range.

What do you guys think about a used Mazda3? Probably a previous gen (not a fan of the new styling), maybe a 2006ish. Any major issues that I should look out for?

I would just keep the fusion. The hit you are going to take on selling old car and buying new car will provide for many years of delta fuel saving.

I just purchased a 2012 Subaru Impreza premium 5 doorwith CVT and remote start for a tad over 21k. But because we had to order it we needed to rent a car to run over to Chicago Illinois area from Pittsburgh PA. We ended up with a 2012 Chevy cruse, I must say I was impressed. They start at 16,800 and go up to 23,190 with a little turbocharged 4 banger loaded that gets pretty good mileage. The trip over and back netted us 37.5 fully loaded with kids and cargo, (including the 3 cases of beer I bought at Friar Tucks.) while averaging 70 MPH. No to bad. I am not a big Government Motors guy, but this car was a shock.

The Fusion isn't going anywhere. I'll be passing that on to my wife, and we'll be picking up a newer car. The Malibu will be getting retired as a beater / parts car (since the dealership would probably try to give us $1000 for it, tops).

Sorry if my first post was confusing.

Heh. Funny you ask. We traded my wife's Malibu in on a 2012 Camry SE today. MSRP was 24,425, we got it for right at 22k + TTL. On top of that, Edmunds has a $750 rebate that you can also turn outside of the dealer negotiated price. So just a hair over $21k for a very well equipped car.

25/35 MPG and a very responsive 4 cylinder. Free maint for 2 years. Touch screen audio center with blue tooth. And it's not an absolute snooze to drive.

I had a 2004 (actually one of the first out the gate... got it in late 2003). Rust was a problem and still is. Mine was rustproofed and held up well but I decided to trade it on a RAV4 for the wife.

They are good cars if the body is rust free. The 2.3 gets a bit thirsty when you push it but its not bad otherwise. I had stick and the shifter was awesome (previous car was a Ford Mustang GT). The car was a blast to drive through the twisties and saved my life a few times when I got cut off in traffic and had to swerve hard.

I miss it. The new ones don't have the same charm and Mazda is in trouble financially. Get the 06 if it checks out and make sure you double check the body. The Mazdaspeed is even better but really do your homework on those as I heard smoking Turbos and engine mount failures are pretty regular.

If you want AWD : Subaru Impreza hatch with CVT (27/36, though closer to 27 overall)
If you want fuel economy: Mazda 3 Skyactiv (28/39, a bit better than the Focus)
If you want a mix of fuel economy and ride height: Kia Soul 1.6L GDI with ISG (29/36, the ISG version isn't quite available yet)

I am leaning towards the Soul. If I can get over the fact that version with the better engine and ISG doesn't have fog lights available. I can't stand the look of vehicles with the black plastic caps where the fog lights go.

I didn't even know you can sell cars without fog lights these days.
