looking at new laptops

Hi all,

I started medical school 3 weeks ago and am decently experienced with building desktops, but have no idea about laptops, especially modern ones. I'm looking for a new laptop as my Inspiron 9200 is way too slow for newer programs. This is not a desktop replacement as I already have a desktop and as you will see, will not be dealing with a lot of things that need a lot of video power.

Here are my requirements and maybe those of you with more experience and knowledge in this area have something in mind that fits what I'm looking for:

1) Budget <$1000 (Ideally around $500)
2) No gaming whatsoever, or movies except for academic ones
3) Want something new with a warranty, no used products
4) Capable of handling a lot of simultaneous word processing, powerpoint slides, emailing (large e-mails sometimes) and browsing (with a lot of high-res pictures like x-ray film, cat scans, etc.)
5) Relatively lightweight
6) Screen between 12 and 15" but with high resolution
7) webcam, bluetooth, blue-ray not necessary
8) good battery life
9) good keyboard layout to fit my big fingers
10) quickness - my time is worth more than gold right now

I would really appreciate any suggestions and/or guidance in purchasing a new laptop. I will not be purchasing until December (if one of my relatives feels generous enough to gift me this necessity) or beginning of January (when my next loan disbursement comes in). Thanks in advance.

look up on the hot deals forum and search for laptops, do the same at a couple other deal sites and youll find something around $500 without too much trouble. and their are enough sub-$1000 offerings to give you plenty of options.

you can probably get a thinkpad under a grand without a problem. the R/T 400's will be 14" models. the T is thinner and lighter than the R, but the R is less expensive.

make sure you have at least 2gb of ram if you intend to do a lot of multitasking and want to open high-res pics. 3 is better, 4gb requires a 64-bit OS
