Looking at new gaming comp (haven't heard that one b4!)

Hey, looking at getting a new computer, blah blah etc. Advice much appreciated.

Here it is at the moment:

Current config

Everything is in New Zealand $! Sorry about that, but you can still help me with choosing components.

The guy I'm buying it off (this is just a quote, I won't be buying until January) seems to think the processor will limit my graphics card too much. I'm of a different opinion, but I'd appreciate any comments on that score.

He's a Gigabyte fanboy (quite obviously 😛) but that doesn't bother me as I don't care about brands that much. However nor do I wan't to get ripped off ? is it worth the extra money for a better warranty? He says he'd hate to see the card die straight after the warranty (of a different brand) expired, and I'm inclined to agree with him. Thoughts?

And please, don't try to convince me to buy an LCD ? they are just too expensive for my needs. Same goes for all the other crappy stuff (k&m etc).

Any thoughts/opinions/observations/abuse welcome!

EDIT: All parts are new, he assembles it for me.

Is this computer pre-assembled or are these parts?

anandtech did a review on the SATA and SATA2 larger HDDs (400+) and the old SATA 1.5gb/s actually surpassed the 3.0gb/s SATA2s in speed and load timings. They say that they didn't expect this, but they didn't test a raid format. So unless you plan to raid your SATA2s, I'd say to save your money and get a normal sata drive. On that note, make sure this mobo in compatible with sata2 (i'm lazy and didn't look it up).

Why a "Task" PSU? I haven't heard of them B4. Unless someone contradicts me on this, I'd say drop that and get a Fortron or Seasonic 520 or 600watt PSU.. about the same price too.

On another note, the general rule of thumb is when buying a second-hand computer or one that was previously owned (even if just for testing purposes)... this goes for hardware parts as well... a good buyer is one that takes at least 1/3 of the retail price off the resell price. He's only giving you a %5-10 deduct on most of those components. I know those are just quotes, but I'd haggle until he drops the non-brand new stuff down to 2/3 retail. The 7800gt on the other hand is probally still worth approx. $755 GST.

Er ok, I'll look into that. Oh, and he does know his stuff, he won't give me incompatible components.

Hmm I think it was the cheapest for the Watts I'm getting, but I'll look that up.

Thanks!

Why get SLI MOBO if your only getting one VID card and if you are considering going SLI don't its a waste of money

Edit at that price he might have set you up with SLI but still I believe its a waste of money for the performance you will see. Put some more money into your CPU get a x2 or an opteron

56k modem is a waste of money you will never be able to game decently online with it

don't have that frame of mind when buying a PSU. with the heatware you plan to have, you want a stable, reliable PSU. seasonic and fortrons do this.

The SLI was to keep my upgrade paths open, but at the moment I do agree with you ? SLI doean't float my boat either. I'll consider that (CPU upgrade).

56k ? I don't intend to game on it, but I don't control what internet I get. I need it in case I have to connect (ie for HL install say).

OK. Could any of you give me a link to a cheapish PSU that would fulfill the demands of my 7800gt? Cheers.

-not quite sure if this supports SLI. never had an SLI board so I don't know what voltages to look for :S

A PSU is THE MOST IMPORTANT part of a computer. Why people decide to go cheap on it is beyond me... ::sigh::

Antec, Enermax, Fortron, Seasonic, Xclio..420w or greater of one of those will run your system just fine, probably want closer to 500w if you plan to add a second video card later. I am using the 450w antec that came with my sonata II case for the X2 rig in my sig with a 7800GT. I have first hand experience of what can happen with a cheap PSU. Had a 400w powmax one time, and it blew and took my $180 motherboard with it..
