Looking at hard drives

I am extremely impressed with the 74GB raptors. They are perfect as boot drives.

The 2nd drive in my PC is the new Maxtor DiamondMax 10 SATA 16MB buffer 250GB. This drive is additionally in a removable SATA mobile tray.

I am very pleased with the above combination.

Even my 36GB Raptor is clearly faster than the 120GB WD Caviar that I now use for storage, and the 74GB Raptors are said to be faster still.
It's worth the money if you have it.

Raptors offer only a TINY increase in performance. It's not worth the extra money.

Hell, Serial ATA isn't even worth the extra money, though NCQ may change that.

See benchmarks here:

There are a couple places where the raptor is useful, but most of the time the difference is only a matter of 2 or 3 seconds - not worth another $100 or so IMO.
