Looking at getting the CCENT

cpals

Little background on me... I've always been into computers, always viewed as the computer 'geek', fixed everyone's computers, etc. I started my first real computer job at a local government agency three years ago as a field tech. Due to my background history and eagerness to learn and also specific circumstances I've been the network admin for the last 1 1/2 years doing everything from basic cisco changes, servers, networking, etc.

Pretty much all of my cisco knowledge has been on-the-job training and it's been fun. I'd like to get more into it and thought the CCENT would be a good step forward towards a CCNA.

Where would be a good place to start studying/practicing for this? We swapped out a lot of our 2620 routers with 2821 ones so I could take a 2620 router home to work on.

Thanks!

i assume you mean 2821s...

ive always liked the Sybex books by Todd Lammle...look into the CCENT and CCNA ones.

as for equipment, try and grab a switch along with that router, the higher the series the better. i would also recommend at least 2 routers so you can work on serial configurations.

for an alternative to hardware, dynamips can be used to emulate a lot of popular Cisco router platforms, but requires a SMARTNet contract to download the IOS software.

Cpals, I'd start by getting this book. If you have some hands-on experience, hopefully the CCENT won't be too much trouble. In fact one of my employees is studying for this right now.

We had a Cisco employee at our work yesterday for a project we're working on and I asked him about getting a CCENT and he said he wouldn't recommend even going for that and should go for the CCNA instead. Comments?

Thanks.

the CCENT (640-822) ICND Part 1 is half way towards a CCNA. its personal perference whether you break the material up into 2 exams or just go for one. keep in mind, you'll pay more in the end for the 2-exam approach ($250) vs the CCNA ($150).

look at the blueprints for a guide on what material is covered on each.
