Guys,

My current computer setup(s) are an AMD Phenom II X55, 16GB DDR3, Gigabyte 870A mobo, Seagate hybrid HD running Windows 7 Pro 32 bit. System will be switched soon to Windows 10 Pro 64 bit, on a Crucial MX500 SSD. My other “test” system is an old HP tower system with a Pentium 4, 4GB DDR2, running Windows 10 Pro 32 bit. It’s the system I try out Win 10 functions or updates, before I implement them on the AMD system (I have a new Win 10 Pro 64 bit install sitting on the SSD, and I switch to it every three or four weeks, for updates). I have to say I’m impressed that the HP system runs Win 10 as well as it does, or at all for that matter.

I have no high demand apps that I run. It’s simply web browsing, email, Photoshop Elements, and Office or Libre Office. I’m thinking of replacing the HP system with an Amazon renewed system, with either an Intel Core i7-3770 or Core i5-4570 based Dell or HP mid tower.

I’m looking for those experienced in either of these two processor options to weigh in on which direction I should go. My thought process is that the AMD system is getting long in the tooth, and I’d like to have a better backup system that the HP Pentium 4 system. I’m seeing typical prices for an i5 system in the $175-200 range, while the i7 systems tend to fall in the $275-350 range. Most have 8GB, while a few have 16GB. I’m not concerned about RAM or HD, as I can bump up the RAM, and I plan to replace any spinning drive with an SSD, and a clean install of Win 10 Pro.

Thanks for your input,

Jeff

I think they are looking at lower priced Intel 3rd - 4th gen refurb PCs VirtualLarry.

If you are looking at older systems, you might also watch the Dell Financial Services website, www.dellrefurbished.com for their off lease cosmetic grade A systems.

If you can deal with ultra small form factor cases, they have a Optiplex 7010 w/3rd gen i5-3470S, 4GB memory, 320GB hard drive, and Win7/8/8.1 Pro license for ~$78.00+tax after 40% off coupon. They also have a small form factor Optiplex 3020 w/4th gen i5-4590, 8GB memory, 500GB hard drive, DVD-RW and Win7/8/8.1 Pro for ~$126.00+tax after coupon. The Optiplex 9020 in ultra small form factor or mini tower runs ~$168.00+ tax after coupon for 4th gen i5-4590, 8GB memory, 320GB to 1TB hard drive, DVD-RW drive, and Win 7/8.1 pro after coupon. A small form factor Optiplex 7040 w/6th gen i5-6500 quad core, 8GB memory, 500GB hard drive, DVD-RW drive, Win10 pro license runs ~$270+tax. $29 bucks more gets you a 1 year warranty on any desktop; otherwise, they come with a 100 day warranty.

40/50% off coupon code BLACKFRIDAY19 expires tomorrow at 6am, but they frequently add other codes for specific models.

I personally have an I5 4570 system and it's pretty fast. What chipset is involved? Anything less than Z97 will only allow 1600 DDR3 ram.
