Looking at buying a truck, title not in his name

I am currently looking at buying a truck and I had really high hopes about getting this certain truck. I say had high hopes because the title is not in the sellers name. It is in the name of the guy that he bought it from. He says the title is signed and notarized.

This is the part that makes me wonder about this situation. The first time I talked to him he says he used it to pull a 27ft camper down south. Now the second time I talked to him, I asked him about the title and that is when he said he just bought it 3 months ago and never really drove it, never had it insured. Of course I could of misunderstood him somehow.

If I do buy this truck, it will be crossing state lines. Does that make it harder with the title in a 3rd party's name?

That's a rough one. I have done it before but the guy came with me to the SoS to make sure the title would transfer. I have also been on the opposite end, sold a car not in my name, but I had the person who owned the car fly back to Michigan to be there when the deal completed.

sounds like it'll be more trouble than it's worth... unless it's free or something

I have this perfectly good bridge that I can sell to you also, it's not in my name, but I do own it. PM for details.

Get the VIN number if possible,

Definitely don't buy it, but on the chance that it's stolen, maybe you could be that awesome guy who helped some guy in some other state get his vehicle back.

Trying to flip it without putting it in his name and paying the tax.

I hate D-Bags who pull crap like this. How long ago was the signature notarized?

If I get the VIN number, what are some sites I can use to check that VIN number? Would the DMV be able to tell me anything about that number?

I think he had it notarized recently.

The more I think about this, the more it seems like a bad deal. He has already told me a lie unless I misunderstood something.

That's a likely situation. I've known several people over the years who did this. They buy (or trade) a car, sell it to someone else without ever putting it in their name. As long as the title is legally signed and notarized, you're probably OK...Be sure to get a bill of sale with his name, drivers license number, vehicle description, license number, and VIN on it...along with the selling price.

Go to the DMV and explain the story.
They can easily tell you if it in state. Out of that's may take a little time.

If not stolen, the the fact that the title is in s different name matters big as long as you have a notarized bill of sale.

For mental health, call up person who is on title.

What is the deal with crossing state lines with a 3rd party title? Is that something that is done all the time? Or am I going to have to go through a bunch of stuff to get it straightened out?

I do plan on going to the DMV and see what they say about it once I get the VIN number. I also have a neighbor that deals with selling vehicles, I will see what she has to say about it.

It doesn't have to be in his name if it's signed. My friend just did this with a moped. He road it but never registered it. Only had it for a few months then sold it.

But the problem that can come into play is possibly really high DMV fees, late fees or back fees that were never paid. Check to see what it will cost to register.

Also I bought a truck once that was in the step sons name. I bought it from the step Dad.

Well it depends some people "jump title", they buy car for X and sell it for Y, and never transfer the title. That way they are not taxed or there is not a record of them owning it.

I would be careful though.

This. Especially where he gave you totally conflicting stories about it's use. If you do buy get it checked throughly by a mechanic first. I did something similar once, man was supposedly selling it for his parents. Title (in-state) came out fine but the tranny blew up in about two months.

You caught him in one lie, already. For your own protection, assume that everything else he's told you is also a lie.

This isn't the only truck on the planet. Even if you have to pay more for a different truck, consider it insurance against future drama.

Let me clear something up here. I believe I misunderstood him about pulling the camper.

I texted him from a different number posing as a different person interested in the truck just to see what he had to say. The way it sounds is the owner before him pulled a camper with it. I thought he said he pulled the camper with it.

He bought it 3 months ago for a company truck but the company issued him a truck and he did not know that at the time he bought this truck. So he has not drove it for 3 months, never even insured it.

At first, I thought he pulled the camper with it then the next conversation I had with him, he said he just bought it 3 months ago.

As of know, I don't think he has lied about anything. I just misunderstood him. I am going to have someone else call him and see if he gets the same story.

Title transfer is pretty easy to do, although it does take a bit of time. Not much excuse for the seller to not have done so.

Well, it looks like I will not have to be dealing with this title situation, the guy just sold the truck. That kind of makes me mad, I was supposed to go look at the truck tomorrow but not now. I was really wanting to buy this truck too, been looking for a long time and I haven't seen many like that one. Oh well, what can I do but keep on looking.

Let's say it again folks.

If the title isn't in his name, it's someone else's car.

Amusingly, we get these posts twice a year and the results are always funny. The last one was a beat to hell Camaro that the poster started making up silly claims about to save face.

Probably good. The fact that you were so eager to buy it probably meant the deal was too good to be true, which it probably was.
