I am looking at a 94 Mustang for $1200 with 112k miles on it. I think I can get it around $1000 though. Anyway she says it needs a water pump. Says it makes a noise when it idles so she took it to a garage and they said it was the pump making the noise.

What I was wondering is does anyone here have a Mustang around this year or know anything about them? Is the pump hard to change on these? Or should I just avoid the car? I am just looking for a backup car.

Um....$1000 Mustang as a backup car? Poor choice. You're better saving that $1000, earning interest, and spending it on a rental car if your main car goes in the shop.

Or buy something with some practical usage, like a wagon or pickup. My "beater" car is a 97 Subaru wagon, with 212K miles still going strong, tons of interior room for hauling stuff, and AWD is a big bonus.

My $0.02

He is right about the car though. My beater/backup/winter car is a $800 minivan my main car is a sports car. A v6, I assume this is a v6, mustang is an ok car but the 3.8l is known for head gasket problems. I did change a water pump on another 3.8l rwd v6 Ford way back and I don't remember it being too hard and $1k for any car that runs isn't too bad of a deal.

Ehh...I think at that age I'd go with the 93 - last year of the Fox body. I really abhored the SN95's, minus the Cobra of course. :)

My point was that putting $1K into a vehicle that will likely require upkeep as a "backup" car isn't the best decision. But thanks for your constructive input.
