i'm not playing advanced FPS games and I'm not watching movies

it's for school and on the go, so battery life and sturdiness is important

-XP Pro
-5 hours battery life on a single battery
-thin and light
-optical writer

Used or New?

If used, go with IBM thinkpad X40/X41 if you can find one in your price range. Obscene battery life in those things due to the ultra low voltage Dothian processors.

Yeap, you can't beat the battery life on that laptop, but then again it is designed to be an ultra-portable.

Since you would prefer new, I would suggest you look into a Dell then, especially their business line Latitudes on the smaller screen sizes. Dell isn't known for good battery life however.

Also since you stated "thin and light", I'm not sure if you are really set on that definition or not. My idea of "thin and light" is 3.0 lbs or under, also known as "Ultra-Portable". If thin and light is "Under 4.5 lbs", then you have a lot more options to work with.

anything under 5 lbs is good enough. thinner is better. I read articles that said laptops could hit 5 hours, that's exactly what I am lookin' for. mostly microsoft word and office programs like powerpoint 'n music production analysis.
i'm not showing off with flashy graphics or anything, integrated graphics will be fine.

Then you're definitely not looking for a thin and light laptop, but more or less just a light laptop.

You have the option of going 14.1" widescreen, if you think you will insist on going that route, and the ability to have an internal optical drive for sure for 5lbs and under. I would stay away from 15" or larger screens due to the sole fact that battery life and weight at those points and beyond will be nowhere near your liking.

The laptop I suggested is an ultra-portable and thus probably something you won't really need in the end, had I known earlier what you were more specifically looking for, I probably would of not suggested it since you can get a lot more power for your weight allotment. The X40/X41 was made to be ultraportable at under 3.0 lbs.

I can suggest you look into a few options, but try to stick to IBM for battery life. Dell is the other option for raw value for your dollar, but battery life is never Dell's strong point. I'm already assuming 3 1/2 hours max on their best attempt, and that's being optimistic.

I would ideally try to keep yourself looking into 12"-14" inch laptops and look on E-bay for some used ones. I'm sorry I can't give you a specific one to buy, but you really have a lot of options. All I can say is that you should definitely stay away from Averatecs and HP laptops. Averatec due to horrible (if not the worst) battery life in all laptop manufacturers and HP/Compaq due to their very heavy casings. (Unusually heavy for their sizes)
