lookin' for 3 major parts for my coming PC

Hi,

i am about to get a new PC...
I will need a new motherboard, ram and cpu

in my mind i am leaning towards intel so may be Prescott compatible.
i know some motherboard for now do support Prescott, but i heard there is something called PCI Express(PCI-X)? which i still don't see any brand that carrys it yet.
and i don't know what FSB the prescott will be... so if i want to OC that monster, what kind of memory i need for it?

motherboard i kind of leaning towards Asus, i like abit too, msi, gigabytes, but i saw so many reviews(test videocard, cpu, ram...) used asus. so i guess maybe asus do have some advantages over others.

so any suggestions on the coming parts?

Well, if you wait for Prescott all bets are off since I am not too familiar with MB's and such for it. However, if you want current Intel stuff I recommend the Asus P4C800-E Deluxe for a MB. Mine has been great. And just get the fastest CPU you can afford. I run a P4C 3gig in mine with Corsair PC3200 XMS platinum memory. I don't OC at all and don't plan to so I can't help to much on that.

If you do wait for Prescott just wait for it to come out and check reviews.

So does that mean you are open to suggestions ? What do you use your computer for mostly ?

i use my computer mostly for everything.
including gaming, music, movies, typing, browsing etc...

asus p4c800e dx and abit ic7-max3 are the most pricey, any other choice?
prescott is damn expensive already

Do you already have a very good brand of power supply, preferably around 400 watts or higher? If not, consider that too. Prescott ain't your father's Oldsmobile... 😉

By the way, PCI-E(xpress) is different from PCI-X, and it's uncertain how fast the uptake will be. If I were you, with your system, I wouldn't wait for a PCI-E board. Grab a 2.6C and an i865PE, a couple of top-end PC3500 DIMMs and OC it. Spend the extra on your video card. Or get an Athlon64 3000+ if you're attracted to its gaming performance and overall performance... plenty of benchmarks to look at, including on the AnandTech front page.

i heard that prescott(the cpu) need at least 140w from the PSU...

no, i haven't consider the PSU yet, and yes i would really want to get a good psu.

another question about psu... a no brand 400w vs. antec 400w, what is the difference(exclude noise)?

What is the difference between the cheapest el-cheapo car tires and a set of really good performance tires? 😉 Quality, lifespan, warranty, performance...

🙂 ~ ah so, grasshoppah... same true for PSUs!

I could write a long spiel about this but basically, just buy one of the trusted brands and leave some cushion on the wattage. Antec, Enermax, Sparkle Power, Heroichi, and PC Power & Cooling are trusted to live up to their ratings acceptably well. Antec has a 3-year warranty (and they'll back it, too) so I use their TruePower units in the systems at work, where we want a 5-year lifespan out of our hardware. No failures yet. 😀

yes, i know this theory, but a better PSU will make u go faster? will it?

i don't know, i don't know how much juicy should i have it standby...

Please help me out with this...
going to have 2 optical drives(cd, dvd rom, does rom and burner matter?)
a cpu, motherboard, ram, videocard, soundcard, networkcard, harddrive (just the more essential parts)may be scsi card... and 4 more add on fans for ventilation and may be one or two more drive cooler...

guess how many watts is enough for it?
i have no idea how much power each component needs, i just know a prescott need at least 140w.

thanks

a beter psu would mean the difference between system instability crashes and other problems with a cheap psu over having a rock stable system with a good psu 😉

Because the Prescott will have a big appetite for electricity, I would lean towards an Antec TruePower 430 or higher if it were me. Antec for the warranty & overall good quality, TruePower for the relatively-low noise and extra-tight regulation, 430W because the CPU alone will probably be causing the voltage regulators to draw around 140W peak (they're not 100% efficient) and modern video cards are approaching the 60W area too, and I like to have some extra cushion... I don't believe in running stuff at redline, not for the long haul.

I'd Reccomend the ASUS P4P800 mobo

2.4c or 2.6c P4's

either PC3500 or CP3700 - theres lots of good brands that up to you

then get a good video card

PSU? im using a Enermax 430watt
But you can always go to something better just make sure that you know that more wattage isnt always better check the voltage/amperage lines and just go with a trusted brand

i saw some Athlon64 3000+ can beat P4 3.2C

i can't tell which is better(amd or intel), but for all of my PC, i use intel chips. and people keep telling me not that just the chip is better, but the compatiblity and motherboard are better...
for myself, i don't know , just feel Intel is a bigger brand than AMD... No offending anyone..

after reading people's input, PSU is a major part too...
however, but a reliable PSU can cost very high... any other choice than Antec and Enermax... both psu are very expensive(price from ebay)

Your friends are mis-informed about the Athlon chips these days. However, it's entirely your choice. I'd have the Athlon64 if I had to get anything, it rocks 🙂

You have mixed-up priorities. The PSU is the foundation of the system. If you bought a Dodge Viper, would you put on the tires and wheels from a Dodge Neon to save money? Would you try to run it on low-octane gas to save money? You'd be embarrassed to take it out in public because everyone would laugh and point at the Viper with the cheap tires/wheels and the nasty engine knock. Do yourself a favor and get a good power supply... the cheapest way to buy, is to buy the right thing the first time.

(to borrow a marketing line from NightSun 😉 although I would definitely recommend NiteRider Technical Lighting over NightSun)
