Looked at a Charger SRT8 this afternoon

I agree, fun driving cars. Have you tried a R/T variant though, with the 5.7L engine? The Hemi 5.7 has cylinder deactivation (the 6.1 doesn't), so it gets much better highway mileage.

I test drove an '09 Charger R/T this past weekend. The '09 5.7 also has variable valve (cam) timing, and ups the hp from 340 to 370 while maintaining decent mileage. I also test drove the SRT Challenger in the Hemi orange color. That's also a great ride, was I getting looks as I drove down the road! But I want to flexibility of 4-doors.

I agree with the others here, the interior of the Charger and Challengers are not lush. In fact they are downright utilitarian, but they are very functional and clean. Also the seats in the R/T are more comfortable than the SRT IMHO. Though the R/T seats gives up lateral support for comfort. Despite the sparse interior, I actually much preferred the inside of the Charger to a fully-loaded CTS that I test drove. The inside of the CTS was like the inside of a missile command center, OK I suppose if you like cramming as many buttons as possible on the dash.

FYI, I explicitly told the dealer I test drove from that I was not looking to buy that day but we went in to talk numbers anyways. Without me even trying to negotiate on price, he told me that he could do a base R/T ($32k sticker) for $25.5k w/36mo 0% financing. Yeah I know there would be other ticky-tack fees involved, but I was impressed he came out of the gate so low.

I also test drove the 6L G8, and I have to say my buddy and I were very disappointed. They G8 seems to be very detuned for the hp rating it has. I read somewhere that even though it has a 6-speed transmission, unless you are under full acceleration, it will skip gears to maximize fuel rating. After test driving it, I believe it because it just feels weird under normal acceleration.

I like the 300 SRT8 a bit more than the Charger, but both are nice. And both have alot of hp when you hit the go pedal.

I have no idea how you're cross-shopping an SRT8 with a Mazda6. Totally different cars. I wouldn't write the Mazda off, though. It's a great car. I  my Mazda6 (until my wife decided that she wanted it).

I beg to differ, all the new caddies have fantastic interiors. Even the new challenger is an improvement over 300/charger

I have to agree. The G8 really is a fun to drive and nice looking car. The opinions vary and are all subjective.
G8 has been shown to be a bit quicker, sips less gas and handles better. With a relatively cheap ECM tune, it pushes 340 rwhp and slips under 5.0s 0-60 sprints and keeps the mileage sane.
While the SRT8 is tough looking, it doesn't do it for me (again...subjective). I would feel safer with a GM purchase before Chrysler anyway.
It's the same car that the Aussies have been using and developing on and is a proven platform.

**EDIT**

and LOW mileage '08 can be had for $20k

If you need or want a back seat, the 370z is a ripoff at any price. 😛

Seems like an OK, but not great, deal. The biggest problem I see will be gas mileage. From what I have read about real world numbers, expect 10-11 around town and 15-16 on the freeway.

Haven't the corvette and (old) camaro been doing this for well over a decade now?

Mustang GT performs a lot better on the turns (never thought I'd say that), and is about as fast in a straight line. G8 GT is also a superior choice.

I'm 6'6 and the Z kinda puts my comfort in a pinch. 🙂

I'm going to check out a 05 C6 vert this afternoon. 🙂

Maybe, I really don't know. Like I said, I just wasn't impressed with the G8 GT compared to everything I read about it. Both my friend and I preferred the Charger/Challenger.

I saw a list of cars sorted by headroom and the G8 was up near the top.

I really don't understand why an auto maker would make cars that are literally impossible to fit in if you're 6'3"+

I just bought an 09 Focus and I fit wayyy better (even with a sunroof) than I did in the 04 Trailblazer (I'm 6'5"). How does GM manage to fail so massively. The TB is HUGE and I have to cock my head to the side just to sit in it?

Welcome to Focus world, I'm ~6'3", and I have miles of headroom in the Focus, and it's also very easy to get in and out of. Cheers 🙂

Not interested in that sinking ship. Too ugly for me.

You think Chyrsler is less of a sinking ship...you're a brave soul...or just clueless.

More over think the G8 is ugly.

To me the Charger seems like your typical American oversized, overweight porker of a car which requires a ridiculously oversized engine to get it moving, resulting in crappy fuel economy.

I could very well be wrong, but there's nothing about the Charger that interests me.
