It's not just drivers who are feeling the pain at the pump.

Soaring oil prices are also hurting independent gas station owners and Wednesday one local station is shut down in protest.

David Hallak's Emerald Oil gas station in La Mesa will be closed for business through Thursday. Hallak says his profits are running on empty even though he's charging $2.99 a gallon.

"For me to stay in business and stay open today, I should be selling my gas at $3.50 to be able to pay my rent, my utilities and every other bill I have and keep my employees' paychecks going," said Hallak.

Hallak's customers support his decision. They say they'll return when his gas station reopens.

what an IDIOT

Well....if he is not making porfit and he is just losing money on every transaction, then it makes no sense to stay open.

but he still has to pay rent, electricity, etc.

you cant just close for a few days, and hope everything fixes itself.

even with a shut business, it still requires money to own the building.

plus how many things in his small shop, will go bad? thats money too.

Do independent gas stations purchase gas at a premium?
He should consider putting more water in gas like other independent gas stations do.

Yeah no kidding, the first rule of economics is that if it costs you more to stay in business than to shut down, you shut down.

it costs more to operate a losing business than too just close it. You are correct, it wont fix itself, but losing money on purpose is a financial no no.
