Ths computer is being built for a friend at:

This is going to be a work computer running 2 dell 2001FP's at 1600x1200 resolution. This is not a gaming computer and speed (for database stuff requiring fast harddrive and CPU) and silence are desired.


only questions I have are

1) Case fan upgrade to 120mm Antec smartfan a good idea over lian li stock?
2) How is the new ATI mobo? (Asus A8N-VM ) Ok alternative to the Asus A9n-sli nvidia deluxe? It's fanless so I went for it.
3) is case http://www.xoxide.com/lianlipcv1000b.html a good one?
4) will the video card handle two 1600x1200 monitors. This is NOT a gaming computer

5) the power supply, I have no idea if ATX 2.2 is good. Is it ok? will it give me problems iwth the mobo?

1. Buy fan from elsewhere. I can point it out to you where you can find 120mm led fan much more affordable than what they charge you elsewhere.
2. I don't get this question, I guess it's "it" is doing well?
3. My cousin has that case and he likes it although it's a bit pain in the ars to work on it.
4. The video card will more than powerful to handle two monitors. It can even handle the Dell 3007FPW or the Apple Cinema 30" monitor. 128 is more than enough for you to run two screen.
5. ATX 2.2 is the newest revision and it will last you quite of years but if you're not a gamer or overclocker, 450Watt version should be enough. Also, there are a lot of PSU out there that's cheaper than that model that should be sufficient for your needs for less price.
6. The must have case at this moment is Cooler Master Stacker RC830. It will hold up to 9 120mm fans which is good for those hot summer days.
7. Take out the CD burner and/or you can have a DVD/CDRW combo for less than that. Not that you really need a second one. When you are burning something, they always recommend that you do not work on other things anyway.

Additional ideas:
*Take out the CD-RW software since you're getting the 7 Ultra already.
*Nvidia DVD decoder is not worth it either. WMP10 should handle that with a few codec downloads.
*The CPU is way too much for a "non gaming computer; speed and silence are desired" 3800X2 is fine or even a single core is good enough for your purpose. 3200+/3500+/3700+ is enough.
*74Gb IS NOT a quiet drive. Sorry.
*Invest on some fan controllers. It should help you on the days that you don't want fans blowing at full sleep. Those temp sensitive fans are worthless and kicked myself in the buns for buying them off a friend's recommendation (well he was the seller...*sigh*)
*Actually on second thought, Cooler Master RC540 with power supply is a perfect fit for your purpose. It's a Micro ATX case with enough room to grow. 120mm fan up front and two 80mm fans in the back with a 380Watt PSU standard.

I know but he's doing datamining so he needs the speed. Sucks but it's life.

1. yes, if it's a smart fan though, only use it for exhaust, not intake.
2. It's good, not the best but it's in the upper quarrtile in speed and everything.
3. Lian Li is high quality and generally high quality but overpriced, a antec p180(or Sonata 2) is about 60% of the cost with being as quiet.

5. It's fine but again overpriced, a fsp 450w with 120mm fan would do just as well with being just as quiet.

7.1 optical drive is enough. I have 2 and barey if ever use the 2nd.

1. Keep the Lian Li stock fans, they do an excellant job of cooling. If you decide or feel the need to replace them then get the fastest fan you can find and attach it to a fanbus so you lower the speed and find an appropriate cooling to noise ratio.
2. The new ATi motherboard from ASUS is well.... new, so not much is known yet about it's quirks; but one thing is known: it is a good performer.
3. Yes that Video Card will handle 1920x1080p with ease in 2D mode. But I would not use it if you plan on using TWO LCD MONITORS, INSTEAD YOU NEED A SECOND CARD OR A VIDEO CARD WITH 2 DVI CONNECTIONS.
4. An ATX 2.2 PSU is a requirement it is recomended that you find one with an 8 pin CPU power plug.
5. Yes there are better PSU's PC Power and Cooling or ANTEC are much better than Enermax.
6. A Dedicated CD Drive is recommended for CD installs in place of DVD for a few reasons- It's faster than a a DVD drive, it generates less C2 errors with CD media, CD drives have less jitter when compaired to a CD in a DVD drive.

Also how much is it for extra technical support? $10-20 for 1 extra year might be worth it.

Um...... I don't see how that conflicts with what I say. The overall volume is slightly louder than the barracuda IV. That's pretty damn quiet.

he fastest single-user drive also turns out to be very quiet, at least while idling. This is not to say that there is no sonic price to pay for a high performance drive. The sudden seeks and ineffectiveness (or lack?) of the AAM implementation are not characteristics of a truly quiet drive.

We would hesitate to recommend the Raptor if silence is the first priority. However, those who see low noise as a secondary goal after pure performance should be happy with the low noise of this drive, especially when it is not in seek or write.

again I'm not sure what sentences you are missing but it seems pretty clear to me this is not a noisy drive.

The quietest hard drives are the Samsung SpinPoit P series and the Segate Barracudas

Make sure the powersupply has native a 24pin. The best bang for the buck powersupplies in the $100/500w range is the antec sp2 5002 modular and the Enermax 535w

Baracudas aren't quiet anymore. Antecs aren't good bang for buck at any price range and a 500W is overkill for this comptuer. A 400W PSU will laugh at this sytem, 350W would be plenty even with upgrades.

IMHO, it is impossible for a harddrive to be 21 decibels. The closest it to anything lower than 40 is that harddrive is dead.

If quietness you are seeking, you might as well go overbudget and buy yourself fanless power supply and tons of acoustic mats to cover your entire case.

If quietness you are seeking, you might as well go overbudget and buy yourself fanless power supply and tons of acoustic mats to cover your entire case.

I'd rather go with a Zalmnan TNN, but I'm being practical here.
