MS getting into chip design would definetly help the Linux movement (as AMD/Intel/NVidia/ATi would have reason to hedge their bets and ally with other OSs).

I wouldn't believe it if it was any other company, but Microsoft has $38billion in cash and cash equivalents. They can do whatever they want to do.

$38 BILLION sitting in the bank!!!

heck, worst case scenario, they team up with redhat/aol, that would suck, but i dont use redhat, and anything they do to support redhat would easily be transferred to other distros

this is all too speculative though, who knows what will happen.

So, let's see:

1. MSFT creates their own architecture for XB2
2. They go on to create a "wincomputer" that runs x86 software and the windows OS du jour. Of course, all this hardware is 100% proprietary and no tech manuals are released. It will be a cold day in hell before they let someone port Linux to this thing.
3. It becomes immensely popular, with everyone flocking to it because MSFT changed the Windows licencing terms: it's only for MS Wincomputers now.
4. Without competition of any kind, MSFT has ultimate power over cost, so the cost of the wincomputer skyrockets.
5. People flock back to the original open standards-based x86 PC, and guess what OS they're running?
6. MSFT suddenly loses all their monopoly power. Unable to produce a killer app to bring back end user business, they file chapter 11 and Bill transfers the few million he has left to his cayman islands holding account.
7. Linus and RMS get drunk.

i've pondered the same scenario.

but i dont think many people would flock to linux unless it made HUGE advances in ease of use. apple would probably stand to benefit from it though.

who knows, like i said, this is all too speculative, its really tough to judge what will happen (like that guy's sig that says "by the year 2000, computers will only have xx hundred vacuum tubes and only weigh 15 tons", or something to that effect :p)

Billy gave me the ability to communicate with people all over the world on a common platform. I think that's pretty damn good.

Linus Torvald is a late comer to the game and he's never done anything for me. That isn't bad, but it doesn't do me any good.

If all the MS haters of the world banded together and bought their own continent, rejecting all MS products, they would all eventuallly starve.

MS isnt stupid, they arent going to canabilized the PC market. They, if its true, are only doing this to bring the production cost down for the Xbox 2, and possibly make it more powerful than anyone else could. Everyone bitched that the Xbox used PC hardware, well Xbox 2 probably won't be, but it seems people are bitching because MS might be the ones designing the hardware.

Forgot to post my opinion on the Xbox:

It's a good console, capable of some pretty spectacular visuals and sound. I saw a review for "Wreckless" once and that game, at the very least, looks AMAZING. Can't see that happening on any other console, or even my PC, for quite some time.

The problem is that MSFT is up to their old tricks. Whereas companies like Sega, Nintendo, and Sony have to attract developers with a good console for developer and player alike, MSFT just started buying out developers and distributors.

Perhaps the Xbox IS a good console that would have attracted developers, but MSFT didn't have the paitence to allow the natural progression of things to take place.

There, I said it. :)

All Billy gave me was a way to wipe my ass with out reaching around to the back... I've been a long time user of microsoft, and I say this... Horrible way to put it? Deal with it... I've only been messing with Nix, and I like it. I feel like an IDIOT when I'm using it, but hey, whatever. I am on windows box now, and I'll be using microsoft products for a while(I have to where I work, and Nix doesnt run CS very well on a 500 cellery). At least I know that microsfot is just the easy way out... I'm not saying anyone who doesn't try another OS should burn in hell. Some people don't have time to deal with another os, that they will never use outside their house, and that's cool. I also don't want everyone to know Nix, because if I can get my shiznit together, there will be less competition when it comes time to look for a job to do something with an open source kernel...

I never said I was fond of them, BingBong.

I am a pragmatist. I believe in changing that which I can change and utililzing that which I cannot change to the best of my ability.

MSFT is not ever going to take over the world. There are far greater forces to be concerned with than one pissant corporation.

Ideology, culturalism, religion, partisan pollitics, fear, annihilation and no access to pizza are all far more dangerous than Billy's products.

Your generation, for the most part, has faced no real dangers. Perhaps that's why you are all so terrified of a paper tiger.

i'm not really viewing this from a 'real world' perspective, i'm viewing it from a computer enthusiast's perspective. of course MS will not dictate what i eat, where i live, or what clothing i buy. but they sure do make a huge impact on computing in general, and that is by far my biggest interest, hobby-wise and professionally (not yet, but starting when i get around to going to college).

Ummm... No. Ability to communicate? That would be e-mail. Sorry to rain on your parade, but it has existed long before Microsoft was even born. And it works on ALL platforms! If MS had invented email, it would only work on MS platforms. Internet? Again, it runs on UNIX. It ran on UNIX long before Bill Gates even knew what the Internet is (Interesting side-note: The book "Road Ahead" (published in 1994-1995 I believe)by Bill Gates never mentioned the internet! In later versions they added it in).

Only "common platform" Microsoft gave us is a common platform for viruses to spread on.

Microsoft isn't powerful enough to do that, but remember that MS isn't the only evil megaconglomerate, or even one of the biggest. You STILL have to worry about the kind of power that Disney, AOL Time Warner, and the *AA are accumulating.

<< BIll Gates = God >>

Is Bill jesus, born again? Sent here to enlighten us, and send the worthy to heaven? I'm glad someone told me I'm going to hell... I think Linus would make an excellent satan.

It's better to reign in hell, than to serve in Heaven.

In related news... MS kicks PS2 out of Cebit

<<
Less than a week after Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer told visitors to the massive CeBIT exhibition in Germany that he wanted to see a warmer, friendlier Microsoft, his company has become embroiled in a row with Sony over gaming consoles.
Microsoft complained to the show organizers, Hannover Messe AG, that Sony was breaching show rules by letting people play on Sony PlayStation 2 game consoles. Technically, this was right and the Messe was forced to act on the complaint.

Sony approached Microsoft to find a compromise and entered into protracted discussions with the Messe for a deal acceptable for all parties, but none could be found. On Sunday morning Sony started packing up its 27 PS2s. The show, in Hannover, Germany, officially finishes on Wednesday.

Microsoft officials denied that the company had complained to the Messe. But the show organizers confirmed that Richard Roy, vice president, corporate strategy, had complained.

Sony has shown PlayStation consoles for the past three years without any problem, and the Messe said it would not have worried about the situation if no one had complained.

Microsoft has been busy showing the Xbox on its stand with employees demonstrating its console.
