yup, it's so fucking dumb. I'm not doing 50 and leaving 6-8 car lengths because I'm trying to slow up traffic. I'm doing 50 and leaving 6-8 car lengths because there's a shit load of traffic and I don't want to have to make any extremely abrupt stops that could cause an accident or further impede traffic.
*shrug* I'll merge in front of someone if there's enough room... albeit, I don't mean "enough room" as in "a few inches between bumpers on each side"

.
Although, what would cause you to make said extremely abrupt stop? Is this one of those "what if!?" situations? The one complaint I've received about my driving (from people down here) is that I stop too close to the person in front of me at a red light. I ask them why it's an issue, and I hear, "what if the person behind you hits you!?" What is it with these rare occurring "what ifs"? I leave less space because I want to fit more people in... this isn't some silly random occurrence... heavy traffic isn't uncommon

.
Also hate people that don't know how to get on a freeway. The ones that just cruise on over without any concern of how fast the flow of traffic is going. People, you need to pick your spot, either speed up to get ahead of the oncoming car or let that car pass and fall in behind. Don't expect me to slam on my brakes to let you in!
Perhaps you should consider
MOVING OVER to let people merge onto the freeway/highway? It's funny, because in southern-tier New York, people would move over often to let you on the highway, but in the south ("southern hospitality"), they won't move over at all. This is even worse when other drivers are very slow on on-ramps and refuse to use the entire thing to gain speed. The point of a long ramp is to get close to the highway/freeway's speed to facilitate merging into the flow of traffic. For example, we have a nice long on-ramp to a 65mph road here, and I easily get to 70mph before I merge. If I'm stuck behind someone, I may hit 50mph, because they won't go any faster.
I have a similar issue with people braking
before they get on the off-ramp. There's this one off-ramp where I see people do that often, but what grinds my gears about that specific ramp is that I never touch the brake on it at all (given no one in front of me). It's a great wonder how much you can just coast and let your speed naturally drop off to safe levels. Braking is wasting momentum which is wasting gas. It also makes me wonder why people love to brake down hills just because they're slightly exceeding the speed limit... why not use the "free" momentum to your advantage?
I'm trying to figure out how ppl from the "Northeast" scored the lowest on this test...
Probably referring to people from New England
