First things first, extended warranties are a rip-off. There, that solves most of your questions. 😉

Next, we need to know the performance characteristics of software radio. Based on what I can find from Wikipedia, it requires a hardware module (FPGA), so I'm guessing it doesn't need a whole lot of CPU power? If I'm wrong, is it efficiently multi-threaded?

system requirements

i don't understand why they say they need a dedicated GPU though :\
what's your budget?

i would recommend a core i5 2500k or 2400 build from microcenter
maybe even a core i3 2100 would be fine, but i'm not sure
you can probably just get a motherboard with a firewire/ie 1394a built in
http://www.microcenter.com/search/s...0522&Ntx=AllPartial&Ntt=gigabyte 1155&Ntk=all
you probably don't need to get a GPU, since the integrated gpu should be able to handle 2d just fine

you can go with a 250-350w PSU if you decide to skip on a dedicated GPU (man it's hard to find cheap quality units that are in that range :\) the antec basiq should be fine

maybe just go with a 400ish watt one

My budget 750 max (CPU only...I have monitor)

As far as the extension plans.....was a copy and paste thing....didn't mean to....I'll try and clean it up.

Most Flex radio users dedicate a computer just to the radio. I wan't to run a web cam with it also, and surf the net.

Also, Flex suggests using a TI chipset Firewire .... the radio likes it better

The thing to know is that a Bulldozer 8-core is really only has 4 floating point units, which is the important part for processing radio signals. An i5 will be better and should be within the budget considering that you don't need a monster GPU or SSD. Do you have an MC physically nearby or were you planning to order from their website?
