Actually, I'm hoping it's just a blown head gasket. But when I drained the oil, there was at least a gallon of coolant in the oil pan.... that's not a good sign.

Doesn't that mean that's just what it is; a blown headgasket?

That could also mean a cracked block or cracked head.

I didn't see any plumbing on his engine, so assuming it's a n/a engine, wouldn't that be very unlikely?

Coolant in the oil is definitely a blown head gasket. Hopefully the head did not crack. When you remove it, take it to a good machine shop and have them check it for cracks and warpage. If ok, then do a valve seat resurface and while you are in there, change the timing belt as it needs to come off to remove the head.

It depends on how hot it got. The gauge never went over half, and the car never lost power, but there was zero coolant in the radiator. And yes, it's N/A

This or a very similar thing happened to me a few weeks ago. Wife was driving the car around and didn't notice it overheating. Cost of repairs was $1000, and that was only because I was really lucky to find an expert mechanic who does work when he's not at the shop. They had to machine the top part that goes on over the head gasket, and there was also a crack that had to be welded and then ground down. Ugh... the welding alone took 5 hours, and the guy spent about 15 hours of labor to fix it. At any other shop this would have been a $2000 repair job, or more.

Better off just doing a $500 low milege engine swap from a bone yard at that point. Rod and main bearings, oil and coolant passages, etc, most likely all fuxed. Not going to just be able to swap a head gasket and call it a day.

Can't see the cam shaft there, the head is still on. You mean the rockers? I don't see any white stuff, unless you mean what looks like a reflection there.

It's an SOHC, you can see the camshaft in the middle of the rockers, slightly under them. Note the shiny cams visible between the valve springs.

Yea, the light brown liquid is on the rocker shaft. Intake rockers, in fact.

Edit: Man, this car is a pain in the ass! How important is the EGR tube? I'm close to cutting it off....
