Talk to Microsoft. I think they might have something to do with the distribution of alpha OSes.

If you don't know how to get it legally, I'd suggest not pirating software. If you don't know what IRC is, where do you plan on getting support for the problems you run into with your illegal OS? The official MS site is only for people with legitimate licenses.

I was under the impression that it was available to people with the MSDN subscription (of a certain level?).

Someone who had the subscription would know. I'd doubt someone who doesn't currently have a subscription would shell out >$1000 per year just to run a longhorn alpha ;).

If you don't know where to get it, you have no reason to get it.
Longhorn is in a pre-beta stage right now, it's not a good OS for everyday use, it's mainly for developers, and if you were one(a Windows one that is) I think you'd know where to get it.

Jesus christ you guys are gunning me down like im stealing something. I dont want a pirated copy OK!! so stop acting like a stole something. I asked where to get it because i saw a few people running it (i guess for testing) and i thought that maybe anyone could test it. SRY so cut out the hostile comments.
Can someone at least tell me what IRC is? Also what do you need to do to become a microsoft tester or that sh!t?

IRC is Internet Relay Chat. It's been around forever and lots of people like to trade files on there and screw it up for the rest of us. Welcome to 1995. ;)

The problem is, there are loads of threads where people keep asking about the latest leak, where to download, etc.
That along with the ub3r-l337 people who wanna run Win2K3 Server on their desktops for no reason tends to annoy some people a tad.

haha.

Longhorn pre-beta runs like crap. It has memory leaks, takes hours to install, its unstable.

On top of that all you realy get is pretty much a slow resourcing hogging WinXP with heavy debug code running a GUI with a nasty shell with a big ugly looking vertical bar across the right.

All the magical next generation stuff is mostly non-existant except as libraries, some beta developement tools, and probably some proof-of-concept code and applications. There is bits here and their that may or may not still exist in the actual longhorn release...

Mostly only interesting to developers and even then it's of limited benifit since more then likely the finished product is going to be mostly different then anything in that build.

If you still REALY REALY want it you can subscribe to some MSDN thingy or just spend time looking around Warez sights and IRC channels to find a illegal copy.

If you want to try out something different then get FreeBSD or Gentoo Linux. That will keep you occupied (both are ELITE unix versions) ;) until the actual first beta of Longhorn comes out sometime next year (supposedly)

Longhorn tech preview was just released last week on MSDN. I haven't downloaded it because I don't have a spare computer to play with.
