I don't like it either. I suppose the name itself isn't all that important, but it just doesn't sound right, if that makes any sense...

all OS have lame names. when they fail, it becomes more obvious how lame they were. (os warp?!?!?!)
i have more of a problem with the apple os names because i work with all of them and i have yet to recognize the jungle-cat heirarchy that helps explain the release order.
vista is a stupid name...but its not all that bad. people will still just call it windows.

I'm not holding my breath on a final name. Dont forget they've done multiple changes before (Whister server>.Net server>Server 2003). As I recall they didnt even announce the name "Windows XP" until Whister was around beta 2.

I'm sure their marketing department has some plan with the name Vista; but we'll have to wait to find out.

I'm just glad that they gave a date for the first beta.

If the OS is so capable, how about we just let it name itself.

I'm a digital camera tech who uses Windows in a mostly Mac-based industry. I have enough problems convincing potential clients that my workflow is just as capable as my Mac-based counterparts'. Now I get to extoll the virtues of "Windows Vista".

Why the heck do you want it to be longhorn? That sucks even more than Vista, I wished they had gone retro and called it Windows NT 6.

The name shouldn't matter. It's what the OS does that matters. Stop crying. You all are going to use it anyway.

Quoted For Truth

Besides, if Vista will degrade display quality on my 213T because the 213T doesn't support the latest efforts by large corporations to take away our digital freedoms, I'll most likely end up using Linux instead (or stick with Windows XP until Linux gets up to speed on color management).

being the "mainstream" OS out there, windows went with something that appeals to a larger audience then computer nerds like ourselves...most familes and especially older people seem a little more turned off by techy sounding names with large amounts of numbers and letters :p

just my 2 cents eh...vista doesnt sound bad to me, its sounds like a sleek new car name IMO so we'll see...its whats under the hood that matters over all right?

Appearantly, they chose "Vista" because the new gui is supposed to be so much nicer with transparancies and such. I hear that Microsoft is already getting sued over the name however, so don't expect it to stick around very long. Appearantly, there's a company called Vista Corp that seems to think that uncle Bill would sue them for the name. Shocking I know.
