Longevity?

How long can a WiFi router be expected to last? I have a USR5461 that I started using in 2006 and I think it's starting to drop connection to the DSL line way too frequently. The WiFi indicator on my laptop keeps switching from Private to Public and then back to Private. the laptop is using Vista Home Premium and I have a desktop WiFi that's using XP SP3 and a hard-wired desktop using XP SP3. I know the 2 WiFi PC's are experiencing the same switching. I'm using WEP security.
Is 3 - 4 years typical lifetime for a WiFi router that is on 24/7/365?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Many Wireless Routers are retired while still working.

However the standard deviation of their life span is very big because in many cases there is No real QA.

First look at the modem when the drops occur, if the Modem indicates that there is a valid connection then it is probably the Router, or the general environment.

It might be that a Wireless environmental noise was introduce to the surrounding.

Change the Transmission Channel on the Router and work for a while close to the Router.

You can also use this free utility to see how the Wireless environment looks like.
