Longevity of 5770

I'm wondering if I can ride this card for another 3 years or so. Would be hoping for medium graphics on future games. Mostly MMO type games, some RTS, and some easier stuff like Sims.

5770 is an amazing card. But mmo type games are mostly cpu dependent. So if your cpu is up to the task and you can sacrifice some eye candy then why not.Your monitor resolution is an important factor as well.

Monitor resolution? I don't think medium graphics on new, demanding releases are possible even now without uncomfortably low framerates at 1080p. In three years, your card would be very slow, barely enough to play new releases on low settings.

1920x1080. I am having no problems right now with MMOs (D3/SWTOR/Darkspore/Dragon Nest are all on high).

Yeah, D3 and SWTOR are both pretty easy on the GPU.

However looking at performance reviews, average framerates for 5770 seem to be only about 38fps in D3 and 45fps in SWTOR on high settings. Well below what I would subjectively call playable. I think a minimum framerate of 45-50fps is still acceptable, average needs to be close to 60.

Chances are, you'd be able to replace it in a year or so with a decent card for around $100. You may even be able to sell off your current card for $40 or so at that time. Hold off until you start to notice yourself getting irritated in games due to graphics performance. Once that happens consistently, then look for your upgrade. For some, 30fps is "fine". Don't get hung up on the number though. It's always based on how acceptable your experiences are.

I think you are reading the wrong card for D3 (6770 is closer to 5770 than 6670 AFAIK). I probably have specific things that I don't care about turned off for SWTOR to give me playable FPS or maybe I have rosy goggles on since it has been awhile.

It's a little trickier because I am building a new computer for my wife (who plays mentioned games). I was debating buying a new GPU for myself and giving her my 5770, but from the consensus in this thread it might not cut it. I don't want to be like oh here honey all new PC and then have to upgrade her GPU in a year or so.

3 yrs is a LONG time in the computer business. Heck, I have graphics cards that are much older than 3 yrs but to expect them to play todays game decently is really wishful thinking.

The 5770 might last another 3 years but who knows what requirements will be for gaming.

boozie: A happy wife is a happy life. Buy her the new GPU and then ask if you can play on her computer or better yet buy 2 new GPUs, one for her and one for you. What ever you do keep her happy.

My bro in law is in a similar situation. He bought my old rig (i5 750, xfx 5770, 4gb ram) and is thinking of either building a new rig now or upgrading a few things. I recommended him getting a new gpu and possibly an ssd.

I'd say 3 yrs is a bit too long for an upgrade. Get a new one for your wife and you and call it a day lol

Depends on the game and settings. Games like minecraft, torchlight, trine etc. all still work on 3 year old gpus and much older ones.

Some people are being pretty tough here on the 5770. I used a 5770 until I recently upgraded, but I got this GTX 570 for free so I would say I was in a different situation. The 5770 won't do AA well (or HBAO, MLAA or crazy high shader detail levels) and if you need a constant 60+ fps it won't cut it. That being said, it can play any new game on the market easily in at least medium settings, most games play fine on high. If you wife plays games and not benchmarks, the card is fine at least until the new consoles come out. Starcraft II flew on my 5770 although I played at high and not ultra.

Well I don't want to really gamble on this so I think I will buy a new card.

The upside to this is I can throw the 5770 in her old PC Q6600/8800 GTS and probably get some decent mileage out of it at my parents place especially with some OC on the CPU.

Personally I had a 5770 and a GTS450. Both are way too slow for me really. While for others they can play on something alot slower and still think everything is fine.

3 years down the road the 5770 might easily be outrun by IGPs.

I've got a 5770 - it ran Deus Ex HR at 1080p without any problems really. Not that DXHR is the most graphically intensive game, but its not bad.

Personally I'm not buying until I see a real benefit from a card for a similar price. The 7770 is around the same level of performance, but its not much cheaper than what I paid for the card, while the 7850 is significantly more expensive. I'll upgrade when the same amount of money gets me significantly more GPU. Probably the next generation of cards then.

I dont think it will be so good in 3 year but then again some people are still running gtx8800 and 9800s.I am still running a GTX260 which works fine for me since I don't have any dx 11 titles.IMO stick with it until you need to upgrade.

3 years? Probably not. I mean, you'll be able to dial all the settings down and still play. But you won't be able to run the fancier effects then.

The core limitations of the 5770 are tessellation (it uses AMD's subpar first generation DX11 tessellator) and memory bandwidth (it only has a 128 bit memory bus width). That last limitation likely helped it be the cost and power efficient card that it is, but still. Those limitations will be largely detrimental to the card moving forward.

not true the HD 7770 is around the performance of the HD 6850 not HD 5770 or HD 6770

Many current games won't run very well even at med today. By next year or so it may not even meet the minimum requirements for quite a few games perhaps. Low spec games might run at low settings with a decent CPU.

I'm expecting the HD 5770 to be "enough" until the next-gen consoles come, and games are targeted for them.

Many of the current multiplats run on at least DX9 medium on the HD 5770. BF3 is harder on it however, and while it won't cut it for an enthusiast, it's still "good enough"
