hi all

i am putting my old computer in the boot of my car to play MP3s, and i want to put the CD drive in the dash so that i can use music cds as well.

this would involve an IDE cable of about 4-5ft, would this work ok to just play music cds?

thanks in advance

The spec is 18", I've used 24" with no problems. 4-5 foot probably isn't gonna happen.

that's what i thought :(

i could possibly find a way of attaching the Cd drive to the top of the parcel shelf, then i (or the passenger if we're moving) can just turn round and change the CD

Get a SCSI CD-ROM!!!

I think that the SCSI cable spec is 6', which might be enough for you...

A CD ROM drive for a computer isn't going to be able to handle the shock stress it would receive in a car. Not to mention the heat/humidity that would stop your system entirely shortly after you installed it. As they say, forget about it...
. Instead, get a portable MP3/CD player and rig it into your car system.

You could use a laptop cdrom, they withstand shocks fairly well. A Toshiba XM1402b has a std connection that you can get a converter for so you can use it on a std 44 pin cable. You can also get a custom cable made for this setup......I've heard of IDE cables as long as 6 feet working ok. Try Badflash.com for a custom cable...he's real cheap, good service.
