longest cable possible with SATA?

is there a max cable length with S-ATA? I am talking on the level of 10-15 feet.

I think the limit is like 1.5 meters, not sure though.

Keep dreamin on the 10-15' . Spec calls for Max 1 meter. 1.5 is probably ok and 2 is likely getting too long. Just like PATA cables 18" is spec, 24 works most of the time and 36 works "some" of the time.

yeah there is no SATA cable that long in existance. and what the heck would you need a 15 foot cable anyways what do you want to have the case on one side of the room and the harddrive out in the hallway

If you want HDD's that far away, you'd be better off looking into external enclosures with firewire/USB2 connections (I'd guess they have a longer distance), or looking into a computer set up as a HDD farm networked to the other machine(s) you want to use.

it would be for locating a cd/dvd drive near the front of a car, while the computer sits in the trunk...

Somebody here on AT made hard drive cables out of CAT-5 network cable a while back. He got some pretty serious cable length, IIRC.

what do you want your desktop in your car for? they make laptops for that reason, and if it is just for music, you can by harddrives just for car audio purposes

Anyways, one person there has got a 15ft standard IDE cable working, for the past couple of years, on a DVD drive Otherwise, do what I did, with a USB2 to IDE adapter

can't sata also be used for external options also (not that i have seen any).

The original SATA spec isn't meant for use in external devices. Some companies have created external devices using SATA however this simply takes advantage of the longer cables. SATA II Spec is supposed to including details for external devices.
