so i just read "the jaunt" by stephen king.

such a crazy, creepy sci-fi story.

the thought of my mind being forced to exist by itself over the equivalent of billions of years only to emerge back into reality at the point where it left, but long after it has consumed itself in the midst of infinite nothingness... dang

I remember reading that as a teenager... From Skeleton Crew or whatever I think the name of the book of short stories was. That's the one short story from it that always stuck with me. Really good stuff!

Stephen King does a couple of themes over and over again I've noticed now.

Body snatching, not being in control of your self, inanimate objects having a mind of their own and killing people, etc.

It sure as hell worked out for him. I enjoy his stuff.

I vaguely remember that one.

Skeleton crew was one of his better collections in the old days when he was worth reading.

After that he did just get into a pattern, some of the early stuff the best.

There is some old Harlan Ellison out there would really be worth reading if you'd go there.

Hemingway is great too if you never read any if the short stories.

I actually need another copy of this, I wore my old paperback one out over the years. It was before this one even.

Yep the Jaunt is one of my favorites.

Also from Skeleton Crew that is great -

The Mist
The Raft

The Mist was made into a movie with Tom Jane that I thought was awful.
The Raft... brrr. Well written and freaky.

His older short stories were great.

The island one had the doctor and his heroin, and not a lot of food. "How badly does the patient want to survive?" I liked the little chomping teeth, the raft in the lake, and the longer ones (novella's, I suppose) were always pretty sweet.

Even going through most of the 90's wasn't bad. Don't think I've really picked anything of his up since I closed Dark Tower 7 and regretted reading the last 3 of that series ever after.

I just live in a world where I'm still waiting on a sequel to Wizard & Glass, a sequel to the first Matrix movie, and wondering if George Lucas will ever do the rumored prequels or sequels to Episodes 4, 5, and 6.

;)

I wasn't going to go there, but I actually liked The Mist movie, I thought the ending was really more dramatic then the book. Just me I guess, a lot of people didn't like the movie, I did I guess.

The Raft is a head game for sure.

Just remembering "Nona" used to give me nightmares for awhile to be honest, because my second wife was a King fan and the "Do you Love" thing came to haunt me a bit after the divorce. She used to say it a bit as a joke prior to that even.

You don't know how many decades I've been thinking of this story and who wrote it. Thank you for finally putting my mind at rest. One of my favourite stories.
