Longer Sigs

Is there any chance that in the near future you could allow for a few more characters in a signature. I always thought 300 was a nice even number. Maybe to prevent sigs from becoming too long (remember windogg's awful sig with one letter on each line :p) you could make a limit to how many lines down it can be.

I ask for a longer sig so I can put some of my favorite lyrics in. Normally they are around 260-280 characters, just getting cut off by the limit. It really bugs me, cause what I have in my sig reflects how I feel when I'm posting and I like to think it gives people insight into what my posts are about (the few meaningful ones, neffing doesn't count).

I would like to see a cap on the number of lines, but have an unlimited number of characters. It seems like 4 lines with unlimimited characters would be just about right. People could list their system specs horizontally without any problem. The problem with unlimited lines is that so many people type short replies. I am getting tired of seeing someone with a 1 line reply and a 8 line sig. Since so many people have fast internet connections having unlimited characters shouldn't slow anyone down. Even a 56k modem is more than enough to surf these forums comfortably.

255 characters is an awful lot when you think about it. Be creative. Besides, do we really need to be able to either write poetry, or list the system configuration of our whole work herd, plus the number of frags you got last night? I wouldn't mind longer ones in some cases. In others, I can see it being HORRIBLY abused. Plus the fact that 255 characters is a char data type....moving beyond that would require what, a short integer? that really increases the space requirements....

Unless I've got things bass awckwards (entirely possible).

Exactly. We will not be increasing it as it involves converting the sig field to a text field, and I am not interested in reading someones 5 page signature like most people in this forum :).

well one of the reason that i go over 255 character is that i have links to heatware eval and my email (i dont use my profile email as that is my work email addy). and that really eats up your 255 charcter limit. but i still fit on my system specs.

But i agree that i find long sigs extremely annoying.

There isn't much I can do about that as the field used to store the signature is 255 characters long, and to move to something longer involves using a 64K text field. That is why we aren't interested in making it longer.

Does that mean that, theoreticlly, the maximum length of a message is 64k characters?

Hymmmmm.....I just wasted about 5 minutes of my life. If it is indeed a 64k character max, then in terms of pages of text, in arial, 10 point, 1.25 inch margins, that would come out to the 41st colum, 6th line, and 13th page of a document. Assuming no new line characters ;)

Hymmmm....yeah, I would NOT want to see that as a signature!
