Hi, I have a very strange problem with my computer.
Whenever I turn my computer on after it has been off for a few hours, the Windows XP loading time is very long. It keeps loading for more than a minute at the Windows XP logo with the blue srolling bar and finally comes to the login screen. This only happens the first time after the computer has been off for a few hours. Once I'm in windows I can reboot several times without any problem, then the loading time is only 17 seconds counted from the second windows starts to load till the login screen. In other words cold boot takes very long to load but not warm boot.
Bytheway this is a fresh install of XP pro on a brand new HD. I havent installed any programs that start automatically when windows starts. No anti-virus or firewall or anything, everything is fresh.
What can be the cause of this? I cant figure it out, please help me.

My system:
Pentium 4 Northwood 3.0GHz
MSI P-FISR 865PE
2 X 256MB Corsair Value RAM
Hitachi Deskstar 7k250 160GB SATA
ANTEC SONATA with 380W PSU
Gainward GeForce FX 5900 128MB
NEC 2500A Dvd-burner

Start > Run type msconfig, turn everything off you don't use.

Defrag your hard drive, then copy and paste the next line into your Start > Run command bar.

Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks

It will sort your XP startup files and place them in order on your hard drive for faster startup times. it will take about 30 min. to complete, so don't restart your pc for a while after you kick it off.

might also be a good idea to download, and updated and run Adaware (you can get it from download.com) to remove any malware/spyware/adware that could be loading on startup bogging down your system.

I've seen horrible start-up times (1+ minutes) when folks have accidentally loaded both McAfee and Norton Anti Virus s/w. I run Norton and it isn't too bad; I think the McAfee was slower at boot time when I used it (alone).

Hang on, he said XP loads fast on a warm reboot! Malware and fragmentation would affect the boot time EVERYTIME.

It could be a delay in obtaining an IP address from your router (assuming you're on broadband). What are you TCP/IP settings. Make sure your router is working properly.
