Currently have GTX 970 with a 4770k.

I always purchase best bang for the buck biased to high performance which usually puts me 1 notch below the "best" at any given time...

Nvidia just released the 1080 series (not even sure what it's called... Pascal?)... Anyway, it doesn't seem that these new cards are terribly amazing... I usually like to see a 70% improvement in performance before I'll upgrade...

So, when is the next round of cards coming and what can be expected.

70% improvement from 970 will be very difficult to happen soon

What kind of monitor are you using as if it's a 1080p grab a 1060 unless it's a 144hz then go for a 1070.

If it's 1440p 144h the 1080 will work the best as your only other option is titan and unless you are going 4k it's not needed for the price.

It's either one of those or wait until sometime in Q2 it looks like for vega 11.

In either case both the 1070 and 1080 are huge improvements over the 970.
 
Hmmm... What card is that for $1200?

And... I need another caveat: card will cost no more than $350. I generally wait until a $400+ card goes on sale for at least $350.

The way GPU pricing is these days that might be 2019. It would have to be a card that is considered slightly below mid end.
 
A 1080 could eventually fill that role of 70% faster than a 970, but the question is if it'll go down to below 400$ before it gets discontinued. The price reductions will likely depend on AMDs Vega and the phase-out will depend on how freely Nvidia can plan the Volta launch.
