After two years of owning it, I finnaly hooked up a USB printer to it. Only to find out it doesnt work:( I downloaded the SIS USB detect fix for XP. But it didn't work. Is it a problem specific to the chipset? Or is just my motherboard?

Anyone have a ECS k7sem with working USB ports?

I never had any difficulty with any of the K7SEMs and USB devices using 98SE that I've built so perhaps you still need to resolve a software problem, or it is indeed just that your board's USB is faulty, good luck :)

Make sure it is enabled in the BIOS. Don't get mad at me for mentioning it. You never know. Every mobo I have can disable the USB, and I often disable stuff I know I will never use. (WOR, keyboard power-up, etc.)

A lot of mobos have an additional header for a second USB pair, so you may be OK even if the main USB is kaput.

Excellent advice. You should make sure that you cross your "T's" and dot your "i's" before you decide that the board is at fault. Go into the BIOS and make sure that anything you see that talks about enableing the USB is "enabled". Period. Then, once Windows boots up, go into Device Manager and see what it has listed for USB devices. Make sure that there are no yellow "?"'s in Device Manager; especially in the USB section (=no brainer).

Awww... you guys are sensitive enough to keep my ego intact:p thanks guys...hehh

- Yes, I did check the bios USB features and found only two: USB keyboard support and usb controller (or something like that) I played with that a little and didn't get anything.
- After trying both rear USB ports, I tried my front which I setup myself according to their USB-motherboard hookup guide a while ago. case
- Device manager didn't show any problems, USB controller was installed. I deleted them though, and reinstalled them. But nothing.
- Finally, I did a short, slow search on the web for issues/ known fixes. And came up with the XP detect fix. But it didn't help.
- SIS and ECS site didn't turn up any useful driver updates, and I wasn?t comfortable to update the bios because I'm not sure what flash program to use.

So after my short checklist, I concluded it's time to buy a separate PCI USB card. They go for $10 on sale right? Just decided to post here just to make sure the problem is on my side. not the motherboard's.

Thanks for all the help.

I have seen two problems with USB ports on the K7SEM. First problem was someone hooking up USB headers to the extra ones on the motherboard wrong, causing a dead port and a dead USB mouse. The rear ports still worked, just the extra headers died.

The second one with a problem - really was a problem. The guy had an HP USB printer work sporadically, while hooked up to the integrated rear ports. Don't know if it was a separate problem or a symptom, but the board also started to not POST all the time. A replacement board (also a K7SEM) fixed both problems.
