Long range AM Radios?

Anybody know anything about the so-called long range am radios? I just moved too far away from a station I like to listen to and can no longer it get with my normal reciever, but I can still get it fine with my car radio. I haven't really done any research, but I've heard a lot of commercials for the CC crane radios so i was thinking about them, but would like to hear some first hand comments before dropping $165 to hear "Jerome from Manhattan."

The C Crane radio is an excellent AM radio. For about $35.00-$40.00 you can get a GE table radio that also has an excellent AM section, and can accept an external (wire) antenna.

A lot of the reception issues are related to atmosphere (night is generally better) and the antenna (long wire or amplified loop works well). Sony makes an good portable AM amp'd loop.

For the money, I believe the GE is a better deal. It's portable, has a built-in AC cord, sensitivity and selectivity are very good, and sounds pretty good on AM or FM (Stereo FM from the headphone jack).

FWIW

Get a long antenna. The longer the better.

AM travels best when the ground is wet (which is why you can pick up stations way the hell out in the middle of the ocean).
