There were 3 people working (1 supervisor, 2 workers). a long line formed. Plus the food guy was falling behind on the food orders.

The supervisor opened a register and started taking orders. When the line started dying down, he went to the back and helped preparing the food.

But what if the line didnt die down? what if it was freak nite and there was an unexpected steady stream of customers? with 2 people taking orders, the lone guy in the back will be WAAAAY behind.

Why not help the food guy 1st so he gets caught up w/the food orders, then open up a register?

Having the customer wait for food is better than having the customer wait for ordering?
Sure, from the restuarant point of view, it's better because you have their $. if they wait longer on line, they may walk out.

But I would be pissed off if i wait 1 min to order, but had to wait 10 min for food. I wouldnt be that pissed off if i waited 10 min to order, and get my food within 1min.

So it's better to get a customer's $ now, and risk getting a pissed off customer who might not return???

It's McD, most people don't go there for the service. When you think of McD, you don't think of customer service. That in mind, it obviously better to help customers waiting in line. Also, a customer who might be upset for waiting a long time, regardless of where the wait came from, would rather spend most of that wait after he/she ordered, knowing that food will be coming out asap.

I've worked in fast food as a manager. Customers would rather wait in line than wait for food. However must burger places one cook can do multiple orders at one time(unless they are extremely large orders).

It's easier for the cook to make a bunch of burgers at once. Plus taking the orders and then making the food is more efficient and logical. What are the supposed to do guess what you want?

In a few places in Spain there'd be one person cooking the food, preparing the food, and running the cash register. Business was slow most of the time but when we ordered food with 6 other people you can bet it took a while for all of us to get our food..

Any experienced McD worker (and presumably those at other fast food joints) can make several burgers at once. I remember back when I was 17 I would do 4 or 5 at a time.

It's McDonalds and you're complaining about customer service? If you wanted better service, you could pay a little more and go somewhere else. Who the hell goes to McDonalds expecting to be wined and dined?

if all you was makeing was 4-5 at once you sucked. (unless this back in the 40's or so)

on 12 to 1 patties we would make a dozen at once. on 4-1 patties we would do 8.

it was easy.

put buns in toaster
put patties in clam shell
pull buns out of toaster
dress buns
put cheese on cheeseburgers
pull patties off shel onto buns

done.

Meh, you're not elite until you're doing runs of 12Macs on 9*2 patty grills. if you put them REALLY close, you can get 12patties on at once. ahh those were the days....not.

does mcdonalds even grill burgers anymore ? Last time I noticed it looked like they kept cooked meat in some kind of translucent yellow plastic containers in something that keeps them warm, then assemble burgers when ordered.

yeah they cook them up then put them in the warming tray.

one of my friends (well more like acquaintance) is a store manager. so i got to see the new crap back there.

its sad. they pre-make the patties and then put them in a low powered microwave. they say this is to improve speed but it seems to take longer and the hamburger taste worse.

a quarter pounder fresh off the grill is great. one that has been sitting out for 15-30 minutes then microwaved taste like ass.

It's hard to find good, reliable employees.

They probably had a few that failed to show up that day. Happens all the time in most entry level jobs.

Also, if both cashiers were not trained on the grill, it would have been worthless to send one back to work it. Doing do would have made things worse as they screwed up the food and orders.

It's business.

If they take your order, they already have your money.

If they make you wait, they don't already have your money and you could leave.

yeap. also some places have rules that keep money handlers away from the food. since they can not trusht the cashier to actually wash there hands before they handle the food.

I remember last time I went to Chick-Fil-A, there was this young girl who quickly took our order, and the order of the person behind us, and the next 6-7 people behind her. She was all smiles, and swiping credit cards and making change left and right with this smug look of efficiency - while we all took a step to left and waited for our food. Finally, when there were about 8 of us waiting, the girl who ordered behind me finally spoke up and said "Uhh.. is anyone pulling your orders?" This seemed to dumbfound the poor girl, who just kind stood there, then looked around. She finally slowly walked over to the counter and starting bagging orders.

I was reminded of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry made car reservations, but there were no cars available when he got there. I felt like saying "See, you know how to *take* the order, but not how to *prepare* it. Which, really, is the most imporant part of the food service business."
