Long Islanders: answer this question

rh71

No Lifer
Does the Northern State Pkwy heading EAST from the city toward Suffolk have traffic around 8pm weeknights ? I know it's bad during rush hour...

Is it better than taking the LIE ?

Friend of mine needs to make it from Westchester to the Nassau/Suffolk border in 1 hr or less.

Usually better than LIE, but not immensely. But it varies a lot.

I'd say Northern State would be better than LIE. 8 PM should be fine. Even rush hour, once you get into Nassau, on the Northern State isn't bad, by rush hour standards (tho' it's pretty rough in Queens).

What he said. Whenever I am on the LIE after around 4:00 PM, it is jamming like crazy. I usually end up taking Southern State, to the Sagtikos, to the Sunken Meadow, to Northern State (end of the Northern State) which becomes 347, and then to Nicolls Road; as opposed to the LIE from the Sagtikos to Nicolls. Thats when I go to pick my friend up from Stony Brook. I haven't driven that late around there, but if it's like it is around 4:00 PM I would avoid it like the plague.

Why not just take Northern State all the way? That's what I do whenever I'm heading to Stonybrook during rush hour. Traffic hardly ever comes to a complete stop.

Cause for me to get to the Northern State, I have to take the Meadowbrook all the way through. It ends up being faster to take the Southern State to 41A (Sagtikos), and then to 347 via the Northern exit on the Sunken Meadow (what the Sagtikos becomes). Put it this way, I get on the Meadowbrook at exit 8, Southern state is 6, and Northern is past 1. Then I have to take the Northern all the way through.

Thanks guys. metrocommute.com has traffic cams... but I had to wait till now to get an accurate "read".

I thought it was bad when I went everyday from Copiague to Stonybrook and back everyday back in the early 80's, it was gridlock back then, has to be worse now.

No, I'm not crazy. I only go there when I go to pick up a friend (once every few weeks).
