Long Island people: are Garden City, East Meadow, and the areas around it nice places to work and live?

I'm applying for a new job in Long Island. One is in Garden City the other is fairly close by in East Meadow. I've never been to Long Island before but I live fairly close to NYC on the NJ side.

If I get the job I'll most likely have to move to Long Island close to work and was wondering if those two areas and places close by were good places to work and settle down.

Thanks in advance

EDIT: additional question: In East Meadow and Garden City is it really hard to drive around in (cars everywhere like in Manhattan) and never any open parking spots, like Manhattan or Hoboken?

East Meadow. Not Meadows.

And Garden City is a very nice town. East Meadow is decent (I've only really visited the town along Hempstead Turnpike).

Garden City is going to be more expensive to live in than the surrounding areas. It has a lot of very nice areas and can get very expensive. East Meadow is more like the neighboring towns in price range.

Stay away from towns like Hempstead, Freeport, Uniondale, Baldwin, etc.

Alex Rodriguez lives in Garden City. My old boss lives a few blocks away from him and it's a beautiful neighborhood.

Long Island is nice and quiet. And the city is only about an hour away.

Crime ridden. They have a lot of lower class people in the area and things just suck. I worked over at a retail store in Hempstead and we had a couple of druggies arrested every week for trying to steal. Not a good situation.

It really depends on just how close you are to Manhattan. The further away you get the worse it is. Watch Everyone Loves Raymond and then recognize that all the aspects of that show are actually fairly common. Long Island is one of the most isolated places in the country. If you are not from there, you are excluded.

Corruption is also absolutely rampant. Good luck closing on a house, it takes forever and a number of bribes (and is far more expensive). And yes, the mafiaa stuff exists but you are not likely to see it.

Oh, and don't forget the people: If you find that in the Midwest that you just can't get along well with 1/25 people, on Long Island it is closer to 1/3.

Bah, have to get to lunch, bbl.

Absolutely not. They're regular suburbs.

You stated that I watch too much tv, implying I am making stuff up. I responded by stating that I lived there and saw it. What's the problem?

I've lived here my entire life. No paying off the Mafia here for house closings. No bribing here. My buddy's brothers and sisters have closed on houses the past year. Nothing like anything you're talking about.

It's completely different when you get into businesses, especially small businesses and liquor licenses. But he's not talking about that.

So you were living in a town that's corrupt, big fucking deal. Like Long Island is the only place where you'll ever run into corrupt housing authorities.

If it wasn't for TV, you'd chalk it up to being a corrupt town. Instead you see the stigma attached to Long Island and chalk it up to the entire Island being corrupt.

The mafia-type stuff had nothing to do with housing. In the case of the housing, there were something like 2-3 envelopes with a couple hundred in each that went to various people at the closing (like the title co rep or the city rep or something like that).

I also stated that it really depends on how close you are to Manhattan. The closer you are, the more different it is (better in a lot of ways). I won't say all of LI is the same, but the likelyhood that my experiences are isolates is extremely rare.

I lived in Suffolk County for 16 years and never experienced anything like what Sarcastic is referencing in terms of home closings.

Sure, the county governments are corrupt, but the effects on the everyday joe are pretty minimal, sans the high tax rates.

Wow, just wow.

Garden City is expensive. Houses probably average close to a million. East Meadow is a nice town.
The mob controlling housing? No, perhaps in parts of Brookly, Queens, or the Bronx (which people think is Long Island).
Isolated? Long Island has 7.5 million people, considerably more than a lot of states, so to say that it is "isolated" is plain silly. And about the people treating you different if you're not from here... try getting 7.5 million to do anything together.
