Long boot-up and 2 clicks sound

Hi,

Last week I puchased an ASUS D2X sound card, and ever since Windows takes a long time to boot up, and there is an unusual 2 clicks sound which comes from the case, always the same 2 clicks, then it continues to boot up. It always seems to get to Windows in the end, but its worrying. When the 2 clicks happen, the light on my mouse and keyboard go out too, then come back on. I'm sure installing the card has done this, but I wonder if the power supply is failing and cannot provide the power to this card, or worse, my hard drive is failing. Can anyone help with this at all?

Thanks,

Jon

Try to pin point where the sound is comiong from. If its coming from the HDD then you may need to replace the drive. If its coming from teh PSU then you probably need to replace the PSU ASAP before it dies and possibly kills aother parts of the system.

To be honest it doesn't sound like its the PSU or the hard drive, sounds closer to the middle back next to the sound card! Although it could quite possibly be the PSU. I've noticed it taking longer to get to Windows now, and when it does, my pc is very slow, often freezing for a good number of seconds... It doesn't seem to crash or turn off though, and I have been playing graphics intensive games on the thing for a while every day.

Did you load the latest drivers for the card (instead of just whatever was on the included disk)?

Sounds more like Windows is having a hard time initializing the new sound card, that would explain the long boot times.

Yeah I installed the latest drivers from the site, I'm really not sure what to think it could be causing this exactly, definately a weird one.

You need to cycle the PC on and off a few times and try to find the exact area of the pop. This will be the best way to figure out where what is going on with the system. Just open the system up and watch as the system powers on. Hopefully your not seeing sparks along with the poping sounds.

Ok guys its sorted I think - Apparently someone said the click noise is caused by the relays in the card on bootup and I found a thread with someone talking about power connector problems with his Asus Xonar, and someone mentioned the 4 pin connector's plastic case could be slid back further with a firm push, and mine did, quite a bit, exposing more of the pin. Anyway, did that and changed the floppy cable for good measure and it booted up fast, no problems there. Hopefully my gear is all in working order. Case closed, thanks for the help, guys!
