So I have this HTPCish box running Linux/MythTV... Abit IS7, Deleron 2.66GHz, etc. Never overclocked. Two DIMMs of Samsung 512 meg DDR400 running perfectly in dual channel DDR-400 for the past year and a half... (before that there was one DIMM)
I swap out the power supply for a new Seasonic 380W and the video card for a new XFX 6200. Now it won't POST... instead it gives a series of long beeps. Google says that's RAM error. (Oh, and another change, but probably unrelated... PS/2 keyboard/mouse were replaced with USB)
Tried reseating RAM a bunch of times. Same result. After much trial and error, I discover the following:
- if one of the DIMMs (which we'll call the 'bad' DIMM) is in slot 1 (by itself) or in 3 (with the 'good' DIMM in slot 1), then long beeps
- if the 'bad' DIMM is in slot 2, and the 'good' one in slot 1, then nothing happens. Fans go on, but display doesn't come on (at least not in the 20 seconds or so I waited)
- if the 'good' DIMM is in slot 1 and the 'bad' DIMM on my living room table, then system POSTs and works perfectly
These two DIMMs, of course, worked perfectly before the day's two upgrades...
What should I do next? Buy a new 512 meg DIMM (I already bought 2 gigs DDR2 today to fix another box... expensive day at the RAM store)? Clear CMOS, try again? Scream?
