And the 7900GT will drop in price quick. That's a competitive volume market, you expect to move a LOT of product there.

The AGP market is captive, static and shrinking. You want profit margins sky high for that kind of market, it's not worth competing over. If it costs $500 to upgrade the whole box, or $300 to get tolerable performance with just a video card upgrade, who cares if that video card is vastly infereor to the PCIe product of comprable cost, it's the only game in town.

Hmm that will take a while, considering fx5200 and other old crap like mx440 can still "play" most games.

This is why I'm sticking it out with my 6800GT a little longer ... I'll upgrade to PCI Express after the 7900's are released.

doesn't seem like nothing wrong to me..
$299 seems like a fairly good deal.. plus it will allow you to hold on to your AGP rig that much longer without having to do a major overhaul.

I dont see what the problem is -- just get a socket 939 mobo with PCIe. Also, $299 7800GS is NOT a good deal. If 24 pipe 7900GT comes at $299, AGP users will feel largely ripped off (more so than they do now). For the majority of them who are gamers, 7800GS will either not be fast enough anyways, or their processor will be Intel P4 or they wont have an optimal configuration for gaming (i.e 2x512mb ram, XP3000+, etc.). Paying $300 for a card with bad resale value in the future, performance barely faster than from April 2004 period, and not even being a high-end card in 2006 is ridiculous imo.

Either way, anyone who wants Vista, 64-bit, and be able to play Oblivion and UT2007, should upgrade to PCIe sooner than later.

Why does everybody think a 300 dollar 7900GT will have 24 dedicated Pixel pipelines? Did I miss something? Stop feeding people speculation.

This is to be expected I'm afraid. Nvidia and ATI don't WANT to be have to uphold seperate product lines for both AGP and PCI-E at all, and they definately don't want to do it longer then they have too. And since they're both making motherboard chipsets now, they've also got a vested interest and getting you to switch to pci-e. Thats why we see AGP solutions with such unattractive pricepoints. They'll sell you the AGP card...for a high cost with less performance. Or they'll sell you a new motherboard and a new video card. Either way, they get your money and preferably they accelerate the widescale switch to pci-e so they don't have to deal with extra product lines and get to make money on motherboard sales as well. As has been said, AGPers now a captive market that is shrinking.

It sucks for AGPers. My advice, if you have a socket 754 or socket 939 cpu with an AGP motherboard...is to upgrade your motherboard with your video card, even though its a huge pain in the ass. EVGA even has some deals in this regard. If you're stuck on socket A...its a tougher choice. I personally would sell my motherboard and cpu and go the sempron overclockers route. Shouldn't cost you much and you'll get a performance increase. The alternative of course is to pay the inflated prices for AGP cards.

Its even worse for intel users from what I understand. Because the northwood is still a good gaming processor but a pci-e motherboard that supports that chip is virtually impossible to find for a reasonable price in the states.

Spend $50.00 and get a pci express motherbaord and wait next week when people will be dumping their 7800Gts for the new 7900s. I suspect the 7800Gts will be going for $200.00 next week used. or just buy a X850XT pciexpress right now from newegg for $169.00.

not offended . . . satellite is stupidly expensive for what it offers and Wireless Broadband aint here yet . . . i ain't giving up my acres of land and dial-up for a city apartment and broadband. ;)

and i am willing to SKIP pciE and it's NONexistant performnance advantage in favor of moving directly to pcie2 ;)

BTW, Who is "Loney in AGP land"?
:Q
Sounds like a movie or game title :p

[or is it like 'looney tunes'?]
:D
