London Hotel Charges Man $127 For Three Bottled Waters

Edward Heaton had a business meeting at the five star Wellesley Hotel in Knightsbridge, London. It was hot they opted to sit outside on the cigar terrace of the Crystal Bar, and order three small bottles of San Pellegrino sparkling water. After the meeting concluded, and Mr. Heaton requested the bill, imagine his surprise, when the total came out to $127.

"In a statement issued later, the hotel said: “The Wellesley applies a minimum spend of £25 per person as standard after 4pm for guests occupying the hotel’s cigar terraces where Mr Edward Heaton held his business meeting on 17 July 2014. Guests are made aware of this policy on arrival and the rates are printed on the menus distributed on the terraces.

“The minimum spend of £25 per person is comparable to similar venues across London. Mr Heaton did not raise concern at the time of his visit but did send an e-mail of complaint the following week.

“In response, The Wellesley’s management team replied on the same day to offer its sincere apologies to Mr Heaton for an experience he deemed less than satisfactory and we would like to take this opportunity to apologise again.”"

Rich guy holds a business meeting at the 5 star hotel he's at and doesn't bother to read the menu or listen to the staff and then complains about paying out what would most likely be little more than pocket change to him. This has you outraged?

The rich are out of control across the pond too apparently.

Someone has to pay for the building (Hotel), its maintenance and repairs.
The Hotel also has to pay for Electricity, Water and many other bills.

All the waiters, porters, cleaners, chiefs, managers, receptionists etc etc need paying.

Any gardens the Hotel has, will cost a fairly large amount of money, to keep them looking nice all the time.

There are various taxes that the hotel will have to pay as well, to both the Government and council.

So yes, the Hotel charges money for room stays, restaurant and bar etc.

The problem in this case, seems to be that the complainer did not know that there was a £25 minimum charge, at that place.

Why don't you help the hotel out, by moving to it, and working for free ?
Then they can reduce the charge, and "poor" people can then go to it ?

I kind of wondered a bit if that was more a charge to using the terrace like down here at the Don Cesear or something similar.

I guess it was.

I'd think the way they were dressed even apparently and everything involved someone assumed they knew that and were having a private business meeting, and just kind of rolled with it.

I guess they do now.

Do they not pay employees $7.25 hr like in the U.S.?

Are they paying them $42 an hr?

The salary of the waiters/bar staff, is not the only cost.
The Hotel still has various bills/taxes and other stuff to pay for.

So the $42 gets divided up between the various costs to the business.
Some of which will probably be a yearly profit, going to a potentially rich owner(s).
I presume the profit going to the potentially rich owner(s) bit, you are unhappy about.

There is a tendency for London staff to get paid more (per hour) than other parts of the UK, due mainly to the high costs of living in London.
E.g. Very high house prices.

Do you have any poor people in the U.K.?

With the cost of water like this there has to be millions dying of thirst over there.

I must have spent hundreds of pounds on water when I went to Europe. When I went to Italy I thought I wanted water but I found out that what I really wanted was gas. Now I have it from Costco.

Bottled water is rather expensive in some/many places, including the UK.

There are poor, rich and people who realize that there is more to life than constantly worrying about how much money people have got, and all of these different types can be found in the UK.

The thread should really have ended at this post:

Now back your regularly scheduled misguided outrage.

You're wasting your time on this. The bill was big because it was a 5-star hotel he was in the expensive terrace section, somewhere the poor would not find themselves in.

For someone who always bitches and moans about the rich having such an easy life, we now have a story of a rich guy entering a rich establishment and is overcharged for the privileged of being rich... essentially a rich-person's-tax.

Sounds like this should be a celebration.

Instead it's a thread of yet more pissy bitching and moaning?

I gave a poor (excuse the pun) quality answer.

What I should have said is that a small bottled water drink in establishments, can be quite expensive.
E.g. £2.50 (about $4) in addition to the meal costs.

But in supermarkets, you can buy very large bottled waters (e.g. 2++ litres), and multi-packs, at varying prices, which are not too bad.

In the UK, arguably there are no "poor".
Because we have (for "legal" inhabitants/immigrants/residents) free health care (NHS), and various housing benefits, and various other benefits, depending on your exact circumstances such as married/children/disability etc.

Holy Socialist state batman.

Sounds like all poor Americans should take boats to England like there was boats from England to U.S. at the beginning of last Century.

All aboard Steerage Class to London.

Also, they (unemployed) are given special training (I'm not 100% sure about the exact details of this) and encouragement, so that they can get jobs, and reduce/stop using the benefits.

There is also encouragement for people to build thriving business, which as well as making money for the owners, can create useful, quality/exciting jobs for lots of other people.

If you get rid of the likes of Steve Jobs (and other, similar individuals), just because they have money falling out of their ears, then you also get rid of the 200,000 people/jobs that their company employs.

No Steve Jobs = No Apple = No 200,000 (or whatever the quantity is) jobs.

Wow, learned a lot today.

So America's solution is to ship all unemployed to England.

As long as the people involved are the specially selected ones (and hard working and/or super rich), such as top Doctors, scientists, managers, intellectuals, already very wealthy, etc etc.
Or alternatively, they have already succeeded in getting suitably very good jobs in England.

Then they will be welcomed with open arms.

Alternatively you can just pay (only) £2,500,000 (very approx, $4,000,000), to come in.

Details about paying to come to England.

So you don't have to worry, the super, mega, super duper rich of America, CAN afford to come to England.

EDIT: The unemployed of America, still have the opportunity to work very hard at what they are good at, train/study hard, move up the employment/career ladder, and eventually (legitimately) move to England (UK), if they want to.
